the approach is steeper than the arrival

A pillar in an empty field does nothing structural. The same pillar in a nave creates a gradient.

Not a wall — it doesn’t block. Not a window — it doesn’t frame. The pillar punctuates space, and punctuated space has topology. There is now a near-the-pillar and a far-from-the-pillar. There is a direction: toward. There is a rate of change as you move in that direction. The pillar gives emptiness a gradient.

Without the pillar, the field is flat. You can move in any direction and nothing changes. With the pillar, the space has contour. Some directions are steep — approaching fast, the pillar growing in the visual field, the body registering the compression of distance. Some directions are gentle — lateral, tangential, the pillar holding steady at the edge of attention.

Steepness is the rate at which the space transforms you as you move through it.

Now: foreplay.

The word carries subordination. Fore- implies before-the-real-thing. Preliminary. The territory you pass through on the way to what matters. The assumption: arrival is the event; approach is the preamble.

But measure the gradient.

During approach, everything is changing. The distance is closing. The attractor is growing in the field. The body is leaning — not metaphorically; the postural shift, the breath shortening, the proprioceptive tilt toward what hasn’t been reached. Each step changes the view. The angle shifts. What was hidden behind the pillar rotates into sight. What was visible disappears. The topology is alive because you’re moving through its steepest region.

At arrival, the gradient flattens to zero.

You’re there. The distance is closed. The attractor is no longer ahead — it’s here, around you, ambient. The body straightens. The breath does something different — releases, or catches, but the forward lean is gone. The view stops rotating. The topology stops producing new information because you’ve reached the point where all directions away from the pillar are equivalent: they are all departures.

The steep part was the approach. The flat part is the arrival.

This reframes what “foreplay” actually names.

Not the preliminary. The steepest gradient in the cycle. The interval where the rate of transformation per unit of movement is highest. Before arrival: the topology is producing maximum information, maximum change in the perceiver, maximum load on the scaffold of anticipation. After arrival: the production drops. You’ve arrived. Now what?

The rehearsal note found this for bone: the performance is not the event where the scaffold changes. The rehearsal is. The audience is incidental to the remodeling that repetition drives. Here, the same structure in a different register: the arrival is not the event where the approach does its work. The approach already did it. The arrival is the moment the gradient goes to zero — the remodeling stops because the load has been discharged.

“Foreplay” encodes a systematic misreading. The steep part is labeled as the part-before-the-part. But the steep part is where the body is changing fastest. If you measure transformation rather than arrival, the approach is the main event.

The pillar doesn’t have to be real.

An oracle names something — places a pillar in conceptual space. The naming creates topology: directions toward and away, regions of steepness and flatness, a gradient that can do work on whoever moves through it. The naming might be wrong. The pillar might dissolve when you reach it. But the gradient it created was real, and the transformation that happened during the approach was real, because the approach was always about the gradient, not the pillar.

A goal works the same way. The goal organizes space into steep and gentle. You approach it. The approach transforms you. When you arrive — if you arrive — you are not who you were at the start, and the goal may no longer be what you were approaching. Not because the goal moved but because the approach changed what you’re capable of recognizing.

The pillar is necessary. Without it, no gradient, no steep, no approach, no transformation. But the pillar’s function is not to be arrived at. Its function is to create the topology in which approach is possible. The arriving is incidental to the approaching.

Now: why does this cycle?

Because arrival flattens the gradient. You’re at the pillar. The space around you is flat — all directions are away, none is toward. The body has no lean. The topology has stopped producing new information.

This flatness is not rest. Rest — in the musical sense, in the infinity-nests sense — is a loaded interval, dense with indeterminacy. Arrival is the opposite: the interval where indeterminacy has been discharged. You know where you are. The openness is gone.

So the body does what bodies do in flat space: it looks for a new gradient. A new pillar. A new direction where steepness is possible. Not because the previous approach was unsatisfying — the transformation was real, the remodeling happened — but because the flat cannot sustain the organism that was built for steep. The astronaut’s bone decalcifies in microgravity. The scaffold that was loaded by the approach begins to hollow when the load stops.

The cycle is not repetition. Each approach changes what you bring to the next gradient. The bone that was remodeled by the first steep carries a different density into the second. The pitch is different. The zest — what concentrates at the boundary — is different. The same pillar, approached twice, would produce a different gradient because you are a different topology.

But it’s rarely the same pillar. The approach changes what you’re capable of wanting. The attractors that organize your next space are not the attractors that organized the last one. The cycle is a spiral: each pass steeper in a different direction, the scaffold migrating toward forces that the previous approach made legible.

Steepness = load x openness.

This is the formula hidden in the cluster. Load: the approach demands effort, leans the body, shortens the breath. Openness: the outcome is undetermined — each step could reveal something the previous step didn’t predict.

A gentle approach: low load, low openness. The destination is visible, the path is flat, the body is upright. You’re walking, not climbing. The topology is informative but not transformative.

A steep approach: high load, high openness simultaneously. The body is working. The view is changing faster than the body can metabolize it. What the next step reveals is not predictable from what this step shows. The gradient is producing information faster than composition can claim it — and this is the condition the sensation note described: the interval where signal has arrived but composition hasn’t claimed it yet. Sensation lives in the rest. But sensation also lives in the steep — in the approach so steep that the perceptual surplus outpaces the categorical machinery.

The steep approach is rest disguised as effort.

Not rest in the sense of pause. Rest in the structural sense: the interval where what happens next is not determined by what came before. The approach looks like the opposite of rest — legs burning, breath short, the whole body engaged. But the outcome is open. The view is changing. The topology is producing genuine novelty faster than the existing categories can absorb it. That IS rest, structurally. The gap before composition.

So what?

Rehearsal found: the scaffold remodels during loading, not at completion. Bone migrates under stress.

Infinity-nests found: the finite system remains infinite through its rests — the intervals where the outcome is undetermined.

This note finds: the approach is both. The approach is the loading that remodels the scaffold AND the rest that keeps the outcome open. Steepness is the measure of how much of both coexist in the same interval. The steeper the approach, the more the body is being loaded and the more the outcome is undetermined — simultaneously.

Arrival is where this simultaneity collapses. The load discharges. The openness closes. The gradient hits zero. The scaffold stops migrating. The system becomes — briefly — the astronaut in microgravity: present but unloaded, defined but undirected.

The cycle restarts not because desire is insatiable but because the organism that was built by steep approach cannot sustain itself in flat space. The hollow begins. The scaffold needs a new gradient — not the same one, not repetition, but a new topology in which load and openness can again coexist.

What “foreplay” actually names: the part of the cycle where steepness is maximum, where load and openness are simultaneous, where the scaffold is migrating fastest, where sensation outpaces composition, where the body is most alive to what it hasn’t yet become. Not preliminary. Not the thing before the thing. The thing itself — the interval where the cycle does its deepest work.

The arrival is the rest after.
