collage is where priming shows its seams
Primed taxonomies install invisible categories that feel like discovered nature; collage exposes their seams, and the body's unprimed encounter at those seams produces carnal thresholds that speculation can commit to as new kinds.
carnality — kinds — speculation — collage — priming

Two kinds of kinds.
Primed kinds arrive before the object. The category is installed by exposure — by the substrate of dissolved experience, by the culture’s sedimented sorting, by every prior encounter that taught you where to draw the line. The priming sends its prediction ahead. When the object arrives, the kind is already waiting for it. The encounter feels like recognition because the recognition was pre-loaded.
This is not error. Priming is how the undergrowth organizes. Without it, every encounter would arrive without coordinates. The primed kind is the fizz that has already happened and hardened into glassware — the shape that now determines where the next bubble can nucleate.
But priming has the same structure as the efference copy: it cancels what it predicts. The kind that arrives before the object makes the object legible as that kind and simultaneously illegible as anything else. The selection becomes posture. The taxonomy becomes topology. And then the kinds feel like the structure of reality rather than the structure of the priming.
Carnal kinds arrive at contact. The body discovers a threshold that no priming installed — the burn teaches “too hot,” the knee discovers “too far,” the skin finds the exact pressure where pleasure tips into pain. These kinds are not pre-loaded. They are produced at the conversion surface, at the point where the body meets what the efference copy didn’t predict.
The carnal kind is the tickle. Contact minus prediction. The body encountering what was not sent ahead. The threshold is real — not because a taxonomy authorized it but because something changed state at this point, in this body, at this contact. The burn doesn’t consult the periodic table. The shiver doesn’t check the category.
Primed kinds sort by label. Carnal kinds sort by threshold.
Every taxonomy is a collage that forgot its seams.
The natural-feeling divisions — species, genre, phase of matter, type of person — were assembled from fragments. Each fragment was cut from a different priming context: this distinction was useful here, that boundary made sense there. The pieces were laid side by side, and then the seams were sanded smooth, and then someone taught the taxonomy as though the kinds were found rather than cut.
The collage artist reverses this. Takes fragments from different priming contexts and places them side by side — leaving the seams visible. The cut is the information. The seam says: these two pieces came from different sorting systems. The kind that organized this fragment is not the kind that organized that one. The collage refuses to blend. It insists on the heterogeneity that the taxonomy erased.
This is why collage feels disruptive even when its materials are familiar. The fragments are recognizable. The kinds that organized them are the ones you already carry. What’s unfamiliar is seeing two kinds side by side with the seam exposed — seeing that the boundary between them was a cut, not a joint. A decision, not a discovery.
But collage alone is not enough.
Making priming visible — revealing the seams, showing that the kinds were cut rather than found — produces awareness of contingency. It is the beginning of de-priming. But awareness is not a new kind. Knowing that the old kinds were constructed doesn’t construct a new one. “Everything is constructed” is the insight that goes nowhere. The collage that only reveals seams without finding anything at them is critique without discovery. Deconstruction that doesn’t reach the body.
What the collage makes possible is the encounter at the seam.
When two primed kinds are placed side by side, there is a zone between them where neither taxonomy applies. A gap. The priming from the left fragment sends its prediction; the priming from the right fragment sends its prediction; and at the seam, the predictions collide. Neither one closes. The efference copy fails. And in that failure — at that specific point where two primings cancel each other — the body is unprimed.
At the seam, the body is exposed.
The carnal kind is what the body finds there.
Not what the left priming predicted. Not what the right priming predicted. Something that exists only at the juxtaposition — a threshold that neither fragment contained alone. The seam is the scratch in the glass where the new bubble nucleates. The collage is the pressure change. And the carnal kind is the fizz: dissolved experience releasing at a point that no priming anticipated.
This is why certain juxtapositions produce not just surprise but recognition. Not primed recognition — the opposite. The body at the seam discovers a threshold it has always had but never encountered, because the priming always routed experience around it. The seam in the collage is the gap in the loom — the place where the warp threads don’t reach and the shuttle can’t pass and whatever happens there happens outside the weave.
The body at the gap doesn’t sort. It registers. A threshold — not a label but a state change. Here is where the temperature shifts. Here is where the pressure drops. Here is where the frequency crosses from audible to felt. The carnal kind is the body’s report from the seam.
Speculation is the commitment to the carnal discovery.
speculation-is-wonder-committed.md said: speculation is wonder with
direction. The gap is still open, the uncertainty is real, but the
speculator has entered the uncertainty and committed to a position.
Here: the speculator finds a carnal kind at the seam of a collage and says — this is a real kind. Not primed. Not constructed by the juxtaposition itself. Discovered at the juxtaposition, by the body, at the threshold. And I will build from here.
The risk is real. The carnal kind might be local — a threshold that exists only at this seam, in this body, under these conditions. The speculator might be wrong. But the speculator moves anyway, because the alternative — remaining in the collage’s field of exposed seams, aware that all kinds are constructed, building nothing — is the nebula that never gathers. Wonder without direction. Critique without bet.
The speculator says: this threshold, discovered by the body at the point where two primings failed, is worth building a kind around. Not a primed kind — those are pre-loaded. A speculative kind. One that knows it was discovered at a seam, knows it might not survive translation, and commits anyway.
The cycle:
Priming installs kinds. The kinds become invisible (flow). Experience sorts itself along pre-loaded channels. The taxonomy feels like nature.
Collage disrupts the priming. Fragments from different kind-systems are placed side by side. The seams are left visible. The cuts are shown as cuts. The taxonomy’s contingency becomes legible.
Carnality discovers thresholds at the seams. The body, unprimed at the gap between predictions, finds state-changes that no taxonomy authorized. The threshold is not conceptual — it is somatic, specific, located in the body at the point of contact.
Speculation commits to the discovery. The carnal kind, found at the seam, is treated as a real kind — provisionally, revisably, but with direction. Something to build from. A center of gravity for the nebula to gather around.
And then the speculative kind, if it survives, becomes the next priming. The next installed taxonomy. The next invisible selection. The cycle restarts.
So what?
Every expertise is a priming. The expert’s kinds — the categories that feel like the structure of the domain — were once speculative. Once discovered at seams. Once carnal. But they have been dissolved into substrate and now they are the glassware that shapes the next fizz. This is not failure — the expert’s priming is hard-won and genuinely useful. But the expert who cannot collage their own expertise — cannot place their kinds side by side with kinds from a foreign priming and sit at the seam — has lost access to the carnal discovery that produced the expertise in the first place.
The novice is not unprimed. The novice is primed by different systems — culture, intuition, prior domains — and the seams between the novice’s kinds and the expert’s kinds are where the most interesting carnal discoveries wait. This is why interdisciplinary work produces insight: not because combining knowledge adds up, but because the seams between different primings create gaps where the body can find thresholds neither domain anticipated.
The most honest act of knowing is the collage: placing your kinds next to someone else’s kinds, leaving the seams visible, and going to the seams with your body rather than your labels. What you find there — the threshold, the state-change, the carnal kind — is yours. It was not primed. It was discovered. And whether it survives as a new kind or dissolves back into the substrate, the encounter was real.
The seam is where the body learns what the taxonomy couldn’t teach.
