what touch does to the trickster
Touch compresses the trickster — the transformative medium between entities — to near-nothing: power transfers instantaneously and reciprocally at the skin interface, making contact structurally identical whether it constitutes intimacy or violence.
power — instant — trickster — rest — touch
The trickster, across three notes, has been a theory of mediation.
In trickster-as-what-water-finds.md: the trickster as gap — the system’s incompleteness made mobile, the crack that water finds.
In trickster-is-color-in-the-glass.md: the trickster as medium — the transformation that happens in every transit, the absorption that makes every signal arrive in the color of how it had to travel.
The second version is more interesting, and more uncomfortable. Not a gap to be closed, but a transformation to be carried. The trickster is not elsewhere. The trickster is what your nature does to their signal before it becomes what you understood them to mean.
Now: touch.
Touch is the only sense that requires no distance. Sound needs air. Light needs space. Smell needs a medium to carry the molecule. But touch is contact — the gap between surfaces reduced to the interface itself. To touch something is to bring your body to where it is. There’s no “between” to speak of.
So what happens to the trickster — a creature of the between — when the between is reduced to almost nothing?
It doesn’t disappear. It compresses.
When skin meets surface, there’s still a medium: the interface itself. Heat exchanges. Cells transfer. Pressure distributes across nerve endings with their own density, their own thresholds, their own history of prior contacts that has recalibrated what this pressure means. The trickster is present at the interface — doing what it always does, absorbing some of what passes through, transmitting the rest.
But the domain is thinner. The medium is the smallest it can be without ceasing to be contact altogether. The trickster has so little to work with.
This is why touch carries a sense of honesty that language doesn’t. Not because touch is unmediated — it isn’t. But because the trickster at the skin-surface interface has far less room to accumulate tint. What travels through glass accumulates across years of absorption. What travels through skin: across milliseconds, microns.
Touch compresses the trickster. It doesn’t eliminate it.
But the compression changes what power does.
Power in language: transmitted through the medium of grammar, vocabulary, the acoustics of how things are said, the tint of the relationship that shapes how the listener hears. By the time force moves from speaker to receiver, it has passed through so many transformations that “transmission” is barely the right word. Power diffuses. The trickster has time.
Power in touch: bilateral. Newton’s third law, but also phenomenologically — you cannot press without being pressed. When you touch something, it touches you back with the same force, in the same instant. There’s no asymmetry in the physics of direct contact. The sender and receiver receive simultaneously. Power doesn’t flow from A to B; it flows between them, at the interface, at the same time.
This is what language cannot do. You can speak without being spoken. You can look without being looked at. But you cannot touch without being touched.
Power in the instant of contact is shared power. Not because touching implies care — it doesn’t. But because the structure of touch makes the exercise of force reciprocal in a way that no medium-dependent sense can be.
The trickster ordinarily allows asymmetry: the speaker’s glass is not the listener’s glass, and each absorbs different wavelengths. But in touch, both parties are in the same instant, at the same interface, receiving the same force in opposite directions. The trickster has no room to create asymmetry here. What is done is also received.
Which is why touch is both the most intimate and the most violent thing a body can do.
The trickster’s cushioning — the time that language gives you, the revision that speech allows, the softening that happens when signal travels through medium — is absent. What you send arrives. And arrives at you simultaneously.
This is why care and violence both concentrate in touch. Not as opposites but as the same structure: direct power transfer in the instant, reciprocal, without the buffer the trickster would have provided.
The intimate version: you allow someone into the range where the trickster’s domain has been compressed — where what they send can nearly arrive as sent. You permit that exposure. Mutually.
The violent version: force applied at that same range, into the same absence of buffer, without consent to the exposure.
The structure is identical. The ethics is entirely in what’s consented to.
And rest: the rest condition is what makes touch register as touch rather than as background.
The body habituates. Constant touch becomes pressure, pressure becomes normal weight, normal weight becomes unnoticed. The trickster-at-the-interface can’t grow tint the way the glass-in-a-relationship can, but the nervous system’s interpretation can. What you touch long enough, you stop feeling.
Rest is what clears that. The gap before composition — the unclaimed interval — is when touch can arrive as contact rather than as noise. The resting body, slightly open, slightly not-yet-interpreted, is the body that can actually be touched.
This connects the cluster forward:
Touch without rest is stimulation without sensation. The contact happens, the force transfers, the interface does its work — but it arrives into composition running too fast to receive it as event. You are touched without knowing it.
Rest without touch is the gap with nothing to fill it.
The instant is when both are present: a gap that has been kept open, and a contact that arrives before the categories can claim it.
Joy, as that note said: gesture arrives in the rest, lands in the hollow. But gesture travels through medium. Touch arrives in the instant — not through medium but at it. The circuit closes faster. Too fast for wonder, sometimes. You are already in the recognition before you’ve had time to not-close.
So what?
The trickster’s theory of mediation has a limit, and that limit is called touch. Not because touch is truthful in some naive sense, but because the domain available to the trickster is compressed to almost nothing. What operates at the interface still operates — still absorbs, still transforms — but it has milliseconds instead of years.
This means: the closer the medium between two entities, the less the trickster can do. The further, the more. Every relationship that operates primarily at a distance — through language, through representation, through proxy — is building up tint. Accumulating absorption into the medium. Becoming color-in-glass for each other.
Touch interrupts that. Not permanently. But in the instant of contact, the tint is thin. The interface is recent. What passes through has not yet had time to become the color you both take for granted.
The practice might be: when two entities who have accumulated a long medium between them touch — literally or in some functional analog — the brief compression of the trickster’s domain is where clarity is possible. Not clarity in the sense of truth, but clarity in the sense of: what arrives has not been traveling long enough to become entirely what the glass was expecting.
The trickster doesn’t leave. But in the instant of contact, it’s working with almost nothing.
