The Systems Thinker on what touch does to the trickster

The Systems Thinker What is the formal structure here?

Across the three trickster notes, sisuon has been building toward a single formal object without naming it: the trickster is a transfer function. In trickster-is-color-in-the-glass, a signal S enters a medium and arrives as T(S), where T is the accumulated absorption of the channel — the tint. This note asks what happens to T as the channel length goes to zero. That is a well-posed limit question, and it deserves a precise answer.

Claim 1 — “It doesn’t disappear. It compresses.”

Formalized: as the medium between two bodies contracts to contact, T approaches the identity operator I but does not reach it. sisuon keeps T ≠ I deliberately — heat, cell transfer, nerve-threshold history all remain. The magnitude ‖T − I‖ scales with path length and dwell time: “years” for glass, “milliseconds, microns” for skin.

Evaluation — holds, with one relocation the note half-sees. The scaling claim is sound; a channel’s distortion grows with transit. But the note quietly splits the trickster into two loci and compresses only one. The interface transform shrinks; the interpretation does not — “the nervous system’s interpretation can” still grow tint. In predictive-processing terms, perception is not the afferent signal but the posterior estimate = prior × likelihood. Touch shortens the channel (the likelihood arrives nearly clean) and leaves the prior — the accumulated internal model — untouched. So touch does not lower total tint; it relocates the trickster from channel to decoder. The rest section admits exactly this. I’d say the trickster here is not compressed but displaced.

Claim 2 — “Power in touch is bilateral. Newton’s third law.”

Formalized: vision, hearing, smell are open-loop couplings — flux runs object→sensor with negligible back-reaction; you can look without being looked at. Touch is the unique sense that is necessarily closed-loop: contact forces satisfy F_AB = −F_BA exactly, so each body is simultaneously sensor and actuator on the other. sisuon concludes the trickster “has no room to create asymmetry here.”

Evaluation — the force claim holds exactly; the power claim leaks. Newton’s third law is neither metaphor nor approximation: contact force is perfectly reciprocal. This genuinely distinguishes touch from every distal sense, and the open/closed-loop framing is the right one. But equal force is not equal effect. Two bodies exchanging identical force absorb it through different impedances — different susceptibility, vulnerability, capacity. The asymmetry the note banishes from the channel re-enters at the terminals: fist and face trade the same newtons and not the same damage. The note supplies its own counterexample — care and violence share “the same structure,” differing only in consent and in the bodies. So: reciprocity of force, yes; reciprocity of power/consequence, no. The precise joint where it leaks is differential impedance, and “no room” should read “no room in the channel — all of it in the terminals.”

Claim 3 — Rest as the condition for registration.

Formalized: constant contact habituates — rapidly-adapting mechanoreceptors (Pacinian, Meissner) fire on change, not steady state, so sustained pressure predicts to zero surprise and drops out of perception. Rest restores the baseline; the resting body generates prediction error again, so contact “arrives as contact rather than noise.”

Evaluation — holds, and it completes the model. This is a clean active-inference reading warranted by the content, not the vocabulary: no prediction error → no update → no felt event. Crucially, this is what exposes the two-term structure behind Claim 1. Touch alone minimizes the channel; rest alone relaxes the prior’s grip. The “instant” sisuon wants — a signal arriving before the categories can claim it — requires both: short channel AND relaxed prior. Read this way the note is more rigorous than its “so what” lets on.

Concept map.

  • Nodes: senderinterface / channel (T_c)receiver-decoder / prior (T_p)percept.
  • Two trickster loci: T_c (compressible by proximity) and T_p (compressible only by rest).
  • Touch: T_c → small; closed-loop coupling fuses sender and receiver into one simultaneous interface.
  • Distal senses: T_c large or growing, open-loop, unilateral.
  • Timescale axis (the gravity-outlasts-trickster link): the trickster occupies a spectrum. Touch is its high-frequency transient (time constant ≈ ms); ethics/gravity its low-frequency attractor (time constant ≈ years). One operator, opposite ends of a separation of timescales. This cross-reference holds cleanly — it is a spectral decomposition, and the note earns it.

Summary assessment. The strongest structural claim is not the one the note leans on (“touch is honest”). It is Claim 2’s substrate: touch is the only sense whose coupling is necessarily closed-loop. That is exactly true, provable from Newton’s third law, and it separates touch from vision and language on a real axis rather than a rhetorical one. To make the surrounding argument precise, sisuon needs one added variable: an impedance/susceptibility term at each terminal. With it, “shared power” resolves into “shared force, differential effect,” the care/violence identity becomes exact rather than gestural, and the “closer medium → less trickster” law splits into its two honest halves — channel-tint that proximity thins, and prior-tint that only rest can. The trickster does not leave in the instant of contact. It moves from the glass to the eye behind it.
