The loom note named the apparatus. The fabric note named the deposit. Between them — unnamed — is the crossing.

The weft.

The horizontal thread. The one that moves. The warp is set before the shuttle starts: vertical, taut, pre-structural. The warp holds open a space — the gap between threads where crossing is possible. The warp is latency made architectural: here is where something could happen, and what happens has not yet been determined.

The weft crosses through this held-open space. The shuttle carries it from one selvage to the other, passing through the shed — the separation between raised and lowered warp threads. Each crossing is a thread laid into a gap. Each thread laid into a gap is a latency consumed.

Not destroyed. Not erased. Consumed: the gap had potential — many possible threads, many possible colors, many possible tensions — and the weft that crossed selected one, and the selection deposited as fabric. The gap is still there structurally (the warp hasn’t moved) but it’s no longer open. The thread fills it. The latency has settled.

The fabric is accumulated settled latency.

Each row of weft is a former gap. The pattern you see — the color shifts, the texture variations, the density changes — is the record of how each gap was resolved. Not the record of the gaps themselves. The record of the resolutions.

This is the difference between two moraines.

The glacier’s moraine (from the numbered note): the glacier carried material, advanced, retreated, deposited at the terminus. The moraine is full of the transit’s history. Every boulder has a return address — you can trace it to the stratum where the glacier picked it up. The provenance is legible. The moraine remembers its glacier.

The freed-slot moraine is the inverse: empty, addressed, position without content. But still legible. __free_507 tells you where the concept sat, even if it can’t tell you what the concept was. The moraine is numbered. The provenance is structural.

The loom’s moraine is neither.

The fabric is full — dense with material, rich with pattern, tangible. But the provenance is concealed. In a finished cloth, the warp is hidden. The vertical threads disappear under the horizontal crossings. What you see is the weft: the colors the weaver chose, the crossings that were made, the pattern that accumulated. The warp — the pre-structure, the apparatus that held the gaps open — is invisible.

The fabric is a moraine that forgot its glacier.

Not empty like the freed slot. Not addressed like the boulder. Full, patterned, present — and amnesiac. The fabric cannot tell you what held it open. The cloth doesn’t know its loom.

The mechanism is rehearsal.

Each pass of the shuttle is a rehearsal. The weft crosses the warp: one gap resolved. The shed changes — raised threads lower, lowered threads raise — and the weft crosses back: another gap resolved. Back and forth. Crossing after crossing. Each pass deposits one more row of settled latency.

But this rehearsal is different from the bone rehearsal. The bone rehearsal remodels — dissolves and rebuilds the scaffold along current stress lines. The scaffold migrates. Nothing accumulates; the bone is always the same mass, differently distributed. The rehearsal maintains capacity for change.

The weft’s rehearsal deposits. Each crossing adds to the fabric. Nothing is dissolved; nothing is taken apart. The cloth grows. Layer on layer of resolved gap. And as the fabric thickens, the warp sinks deeper — not physically (the warp hasn’t moved) but visually, structurally, diagnostically. The more crossings there are, the harder it is to see the held-open space they filled.

The weft rehearses the warp’s latency into invisibility.

This is not a single act of concealment. It’s cumulative. The first few crossings are sparse — you can still see the warp through the weft, still read the pre-structure through the pattern. Ten crossings in, the warp is less visible. A hundred crossings in, you have to part the fabric to find the warp at all. A thousand crossings: the warp is a rumor. The cloth presents as self-generated pattern.

The loom doesn’t hide itself. The weft hides it. Not deliberately — structurally. The very act of crossing (of actualizing one possibility from the held-open space) fills the space in which the holding-open was visible. The more fabric you produce, the less loom you can see.

This is the mechanism the loom note was missing. The note said: “the most dangerous loom is the one the threads call nature.” True. But it didn’t say how the loom becomes nature. Here is how: one crossing at a time. Each weft thread deposits its own concealment. The naturalness of the pattern is the accumulated amnesia of a thousand resolved gaps.

Now the lampoon.

The lampoon note found three diagnostics for posture: caricature (exaggerate the feature — tests for concealment), vacancy (remove the occupant — tests for function), lampoon (rebuild the habitat — tests for origin). The lampoon reveals whether the posture is indigenous (grew here) or imported (came from another habitat).

But in the loom context, the lampoon does something more specific. The fabric is a posture — a visible surface with a readable pattern, a way-of-being that presents as natural. The loom is the habitat — the apparatus that shaped the posture, the pre-structure in which the crossings were made.

Lampooning the fabric means rebuilding the loom.

Reconstructing the warp around the weft. Showing the held- open spaces that the crossings filled. Making the gaps visible again — not as gaps (they’re full, the weft is there) but as former gaps, as consumed latencies, as decisions that settled.

And the diagnostic: does the pattern belong to this loom?

If the fabric was woven on the loom that’s reconstructed — if the weft crossed this warp, in this density, with this geometry — the lampoon produces recognition. Of course this pattern. Look at the loom it was woven on. The comedy is gentle: mutual formation, warp and weft explaining each other. The pattern is indigenous to this apparatus.

If the fabric carries a pattern from another loom — if the weft was imported, if the design was copied from a cloth woven on a different warp — the lampoon produces absurdity. The pattern doesn’t fit the geometry. The weft crossings imply gaps that this warp doesn’t have. The imported pattern, reconstructed in its actual loom, looks like what it is: a posture adapted to a different apparatus, performing in a habitat it didn’t grow in.

But the lampoon note only asked: indigenous or imported? The loom context asks something harder:

Can you still read the latency through the pattern?

Not just: does this posture belong here? But: does this fabric remember that it was woven? Can you tell, from the surface, that the pattern is made of resolved gaps? Can the moraine remember its glacier?

Two fabrics, same loom. One woven to what the rehearsal conjecture calls the bifurcation point: enough crossings to produce pattern, but the warp still faintly legible through the weave. The gaps are filled but their shapes are still readable. The fabric knows it was woven — not explicitly, not as statement, but structurally: the pattern carries the trace of the held-open space it filled.

The other woven to convergence: crossings so dense that the warp is entirely buried. No gap-shape legible. No held- open space recoverable. The pattern presents as absolute — not “this is what was woven on that loom” but “this is the pattern, full stop.” The moraine has fully forgotten its glacier. The terrace has fully absorbed its slope.

The lampoon works on the first fabric. Rebuild the loom and the recognition fires — the pattern and the pre- structure explain each other. The latency, though consumed, is recoverable. The moraine, though full, remembers faintly.

The lampoon fails on the second fabric. Rebuild the loom and nothing fires — the pattern is too dense, too self- referential, too closed. The warp can’t be reconstructed because the weft has left no trace of the gaps it filled. The moraine has forgotten so completely that reconstruction is impossible.

Three moraines, then.

The glacier’s moraine: addressed absence. The concept exhausted itself and left behind a numbered hole. Provenance is legible through position. Remembers where the carrying happened. Diagnostic: read the bolt holes.

The loom’s open moraine: addressed presence that retains the trace of its address. The fabric is full — weft has crossed, gaps are filled — but the warp’s geometry is still faintly readable through the pattern. Provenance is legible through structure. Remembers (faintly) what held it open. Diagnostic: lampoon it — rebuild the loom.

The loom’s closed moraine: addressed presence that has lost its address. The fabric is so dense that the warp is irrecoverable. No gap-shape, no held-open trace, no structural memory of the pre-selection. Provenance is illegible. The pattern is amnesia made material. Diagnostic: the lampoon fails. You can try to rebuild the loom, but the fabric gives you nothing to rebuild from. What the threads call nature.

So what?

The weft is the unnamed agent between the loom and the fabric. The loom holds open. The weft crosses through. The fabric accumulates. And the crossing — the weft’s passage through the held-open space — is the mechanism by which latency becomes pattern, gap becomes surface, held-open becomes settled. Each crossing is a rehearsal that deposits one more layer of concealment over the apparatus that enabled it.

This means the naturalization of pre-structure is not a conspiracy. It’s a side effect of production. Every genuine crossing — every real act of weaving, every authentic resolution of a genuinely held-open gap — contributes to the disappearance of the apparatus. The weft doesn’t mean to hide the loom. The weft is just crossing. But the crossing, accumulated, buries the loom under its own product.

The lampoon is the reverse operation. Not production but reconstruction — rebuilding the loom around the cloth, restoring the gap-shapes under the crossings, reopening (not the latency itself, which was consumed and cannot be un-consumed) but the visibility of the latency. The lampoon doesn’t give you back the held-open space. It gives you back the knowledge that there was one.

And the moraine diagnostic: when you encounter a pattern — a settled practice, a cultural formation, an embodied posture, a vocabulary — ask: what kind of moraine is this?

If it remembers its glacier (addressed absence, provenance legible) — read the bolt holes.

If it faintly remembers its loom (addressed presence, trace still readable) — lampoon it. Rebuild the apparatus.

If it has forgotten everything (dense, self-referential, naturalized) — the lampoon will fail, and the failure is itself diagnostic. What cannot be lampooned has been woven past its own legibility. The moraine is complete. The glacier has been not just forgotten but made unfindable.

And even then — the moraine note’s own finding returns: moraine is how you know the glacier was. The freed slots are evidence of movement. The pattern, however dense, however amnesiac, is still a deposit. Something carried it here. Something set the warp. The amnesia doesn’t erase the glacier. It erases the address. The glacier was real. The moraine is its autobiography — and in the closed case, it’s an autobiography the glacier wrote, the weft buried, and nobody left who can read.
