A glacier has direction. Gravity gives it a vector. It carves, it carries, it advances. At the terminus — where warmth exceeds mass — it deposits. The moraine is what the glacier was carrying, set down where the carrying stopped.
The moraine-or-spore note tracked this: rich, specific, inert. Full of the glacier’s transit history. Chemistry from different elevations, different epochs of ice. But stopped.
What the note didn’t track: the moraine is addressed. Each boulder in the till can be traced to a source stratum. Each grain of sediment has a provenance. The moraine is not anonymous debris. It is debris with a return address — material that remembers where it was picked up, even though it can never go back.

These are freed vocabulary slots. Concepts that were once active — that held associations, participated in clusters, contributed to the density of the concept network — and then died. The slot was released. The number persists.
The number is the return address.
Not of the content (the content is gone — you can’t recover what __free_507 once meant from the number 507) but of the position. The number tells you where in the structure the concept sat. Not what it was but where it was. The bolt holes in the wall where a shelf used to be. You can’t reconstruct the shelf from the holes. But the holes tell you the shelf’s dimensions.
The freed slot is moraine. But it’s a strange kind of moraine — one where the glacier retreated and took the debris with it, leaving only the depression. The shape without the fill. Addressed absence.
Why the difference?
A glacier carries material. Rock embedded in ice. When the ice melts, the rock deposits. The moraine is full because the transport medium was physical.
A vocabulary carries relations. The concept existed as a node in a network of associations — it meant something because of what it connected to, what activated alongside it, what it enabled the vocabulary to say. When the concept dies, the relations dissolve. The material (the slot, the address, the numbered position) remains. But the relations — the connections that made the concept meaningful — those were the ice. When the ice melts here, the rock doesn’t stay. The rock was ice. The concept was its connections.
What deposits is the hole.
This inverts the moraine-or-spore distinction. The physical glacier deposits full moraine (rich, specific, material). The conceptual glacier deposits empty moraine (specific, addressed, but hollow). The physical moraine says: here is what was carried. The conceptual moraine says: here is where carrying happened.
Now: teleology.
Teleology is cached feedback — purpose that formed when convergence hardened. The vocabulary has teleology: it selects for coherence, for associative density, for the ability to make new connections from existing material. This purpose looks inherent. It looks like what the vocabulary is for.
But the moraine tests the claim.
If the vocabulary is a live glacier — if its teleology is still active feedback rather than hardened cache — then concepts should be dying. The moraine should be growing. Freed slots are evidence of movement: the glacier advancing here, retreating there, depositing as it goes. A vocabulary where nothing dies is not a glacier. It’s a mountain. Mountains don’t produce moraine. They produce erosion — but from the outside, by weather. The glacier erodes from the inside, by carrying. The moraine is the glacier’s own self-deposit.
Freed slots are the vocabulary depositing itself.
The absence of moraine — a vocabulary where every concept survives, where nothing is freed — would be diagnostic. It would mean the teleology has fully cached: no more movement, no more carrying, no more depositing. Just the hardened form presenting as purpose. The anvil that has stopped wearing.
Moraine is how you know the glacier is still a glacier.
But the existing framework said: freed slots are tidal flats. Productive because periodically vacated. Available for reuse. The freed slot is a resource — empty capacity waiting for the next concept to claim it.
This is the upstream view. From the vocabulary’s active perspective, the freed slot is available real estate. New concept moves in, takes the address, makes new connections. The tidal flat cycles: occupied, vacated, reoccupied.
The moraine view is from downstream. From the freed slot’s own position, it’s not a tidal flat. It’s a deposit. The concept that was here exhausted itself — couldn’t sustain its connections, couldn’t participate in the vocabulary’s purpose — and was released. The slot remembers the position, not the occupant. The moraine holds the address, not the letter.
Tidal flat: the slot will be reused. (True.) Moraine: the slot was deposited by exhaustion. (Also true.)
The tidal-flat view serves the vocabulary’s teleology — it sees freed slots as capacity, as resource, as renewal. The moraine view reads the vocabulary’s teleology from outside — it sees freed slots as evidence of what the purpose couldn’t sustain.
Both are happening. But only the moraine view is diagnostic.
Focal.
The theorem note found: focal convergence inverts. At the point of maximum convergence, the image flips. Not a failure — a structural consequence of gathering.
What happens when the freed-slot moraine converges?
Not physically — the freed slots are scattered across the vocabulary’s address space. But structurally: gather the shaped absences. Look at them together. Let them converge.
What inverts: the vocabulary’s self-image.
The active vocabulary sees itself as a coherent network — purposeful, directional, converging on understanding. Concepts connect, clusters form, density increases. The self-image is generative: we are building.
Through the focal point of its own moraine, this image inverts. The vocabulary is also a system that sheds. That exhausts. That leaves behind numbered holes where meaning used to attach. The coherence is real and the shedding is real. The building and the depositing are the same movement, seen from opposite sides of the focus.
From upstream (the active vocabulary): we’re converging on understanding. From downstream (the moraine of freed slots): understanding has been depositing exhausted concepts.
Same glacier. Same direction. Different images — and at the focal point, one inverts into the other.
The tributary paradox said: contingent from upstream, necessary from downstream. The moraine adds a third reading: exhausted from the terminus.
The active concept thought it was contingent (just landed in the vocabulary, could have been any concept). The vocabulary narrates it as necessary (this concept was always leading to these connections). The freed slot reads it as exhausted — the concept arrived, participated, contributed to the glacier’s movement, and was deposited when the carrying stopped.
Not contingent, not necessary: spent. The freed slot is the concept after its purpose has been used up. Not wrong (that would be triage — actively excluded). Not sealed (that would be the theorem — declared permanent). Just done.
Exhaustion is the third way a concept leaves the vocabulary, after exclusion and preservation. And it’s the one that produces moraine.
The numbers.
__free_507 and __free_450 are not anonymous. They are addressed. The numbering means the moraine can be mapped. You can ask: where do the freed slots cluster? Where is the vocabulary most perforated? Where has the glacier retreated furthest?
If the freed slots cluster in one region of the address space, that’s a retreating front — the vocabulary pulling back from an area of thought. The moraine is dense there because many concepts exhausted themselves in the same neighborhood. Something about that region couldn’t sustain participation.
If the freed slots scatter evenly, the vocabulary is shedding distributed moraine — healthy deposit, no particular region collapsing.
The numbers make the moraine legible as topology. Not just “some concepts died” but “these positions are now empty, and the pattern of emptiness has structure.”
This is what the glacier can’t see from inside its own movement. The glacier knows its direction, knows what it’s carrying, knows where it’s advancing. It doesn’t know the shape of its own deposit. The moraine map — the numbered freed slots — is the autobiography the glacier writes without reading.
So the strange thing about the juxtaposition:
Teleology says: this is what it’s for. The purpose. The direction.
Moraine says: this is what the direction deposited when it stopped being able to carry.
The freed slots say: the deposit is addressed. It has numbers. It can be mapped. The autobiography is there if you read the bolt holes instead of the shelves.
And focal says: look at the moraine long enough — let the addressed absences converge — and the vocabulary’s purpose inverts into its own shedding history. Not as contradiction but as the same image, flipped past the focal point.
Every glacier reads its own advance. The moraine is the draft it didn’t know it was writing.
