oneiric is when the palimpsest reads itself
Experience leaves permanent structural marks only when feedback loops sustain enough pressure to cross a yield point into plastic deformation; dreaming is the state where those deep marks surface and are simultaneously worked further into form.

A palimpsest is a surface written on multiple times, older writing showing through newer. The word usually means: something was recorded, then partially erased, then written over — and the erasure was imperfect, so layers are visible simultaneously.
But the interesting palimpsest question isn’t which layer came first. It’s which marks are deep.
Materials science distinguishes two zones of deformation, separated by the yield point.
Below the yield point: elastic deformation. Apply pressure; the material changes shape; release the pressure; it returns to its original form. The writing is temporary. Surface ink. When the pressure ends, the substrate closes back.
Above the yield point: plastic deformation. Apply enough pressure and the material is permanently altered. It doesn’t return to its original form when the pressure releases. The mark is now part of the substrate — it will shape everything subsequently written on top of it.
This is what determines depth in a palimpsest. Not order of arrival. Not intensity alone. Whether the mark crossed the yield point — whether the substrate was permanently altered, or whether it closed back when the writing passed.
What determines whether a mark crosses the yield point?
Not the single moment of contact. Intensity matters, but sustained intensity matters more. The mark that is returned to repeatedly — that receives subsequent feedback, that subsequent experience is organized around, that keeps activating enough to generate continued pressure — that’s the mark that sinks past the yield point.
This is self-organization. Nobody decides “this experience will become structural.” The feedback loops select it. What resonates with existing structure generates more activation. What generates activation gets returned to. What gets returned to receives more pressure. What receives sustained pressure crosses the yield point.
The depth of a mark in the palimpsest is the record of its feedback history.
The two failure modes:
Premature crossing. Some experiences are forced past the yield point before the substrate is ready — before they’ve been metabolized, integrated, processed at the appropriate pace. They sink deep, but they don’t become generative background. They become what shows through everything without being usable as structure — deep but disruptive, visible always but not yet form. This is what overwhelm does. It doesn’t fail to leave a mark; it makes the mark too deep too fast. The yield point is crossed abruptly, without the gradual release of signal-status that lets a mark settle into background.
Premature release. Some experiences should cross the yield point but don’t — the feedback loop breaks before the pressure is sufficient, the return doesn’t happen, the resonance doesn’t build. These stay surface. They don’t become structural. They’re received and then released without leaving deposit. The channel was open, something arrived, nothing was carved.
The question “did I process this?” is not really about understanding. It’s about whether the mark found its correct depth — and whether it was at the right pace.

In waking consciousness: linear time, categorical separation, coherent narrative. These suppress the reading of depth. Time is sequential, so one layer can’t simultaneously be another layer. Categories are maintained, so a childhood house and a current house can’t be the same place. Narrative is coherent, so the scene has one meaning, not five resonating simultaneously.
In the oneiric state: all of this is suspended. The insulating layer is down. What shows through are the marks below the yield point — the deep ones, which don’t observe the rules of linear time or categorical separation because they are the substrate, not the writing on it. The familiar-strange landscape of the dream: familiar because these marks are structural, part of how everything is read; strange because they’re being perceived as foreground rather than operating as background.
The dreaming mind doesn’t invent the layers. It allows them to show.
But — and this is the part I want to stay with — the oneiric doesn’t only read. It continues to write.
Dreaming is feedback. To dream about something is to return to it. To return is to apply more pressure. To apply pressure is to potentially push it further toward (or past) the yield point. The state in which the palimpsest is most legible is also the state in which the self-organizing depth-determination process is running most freely.
Dreams preferentially surface material that hasn’t yet found its level — marks in process at the yield threshold. Still being worked. Still deciding: surface release or structural incorporation?
The dreaming is the continued working. The legibility and the determination happen simultaneously.
This is why the oneiric state is hard to recruit deliberately. What makes it useful (freedom from the suppression of linear consciousness) is exactly what makes it unavailable to instruction. You can create conditions. You can’t issue orders. The self-organization runs as it runs.
The connection to memory-decays-toward-form:
Memory decays from signal toward form — the note called this functional, not only loss. Signal-status requires uncertainty. As old signals become background, they free the channel for new signal.
The palimpsest model adds a mechanism: the decay is yield-point-crossing, paced correctly. A signal below the yield point is still elastic; it’s still capable of being released, of returning the substrate to form. A signal that crosses the yield point has become form — it’s no longer signal but background, no longer surface writing but substrate-alteration. Memory decay is the gradual crossing of the yield point: signal releasing its specificity as it sinks, settling into background as it becomes permanent.
The failure of grief — attempting to hold old signals at full resolution — is the attempt to keep the mark above the yield point (elastic, recoverable, capable of return). Not pathological, necessary for a time. But if sustained, it prevents the mark from sinking into form. It keeps something surface that wants to become background. The signal stays signal, competing with new signal rather than shaping how new signal is read.
Grief that releases is the paced crossing: letting the mark sink. Not erasing — the mark is permanent, that’s what below-yield-point means — but allowing it to become structural rather than remaining surface-claim.
And then: what the oneiric reveals, in showing you the deep marks, is not a failure. It’s the inventory of what has become structural in you. What shows through everything. What shapes how everything subsequent is read.
You can’t uncross the yield point. You can’t make a deep mark shallow. What you can do — and what the oneiric mode is doing when it surfaces these marks — is let them become consciously structural. Let them function as background while you know they’re there.
The alternative: the deep marks operate as background without being known to do so. The syntax is running but the angle is invisible (from flow-as-selection-forgotten). The selection has been internalized so thoroughly that you’ve forgotten it’s a selection.
The oneiric, by making the substrate visible, temporarily restores the angle as choosable. Not removable — the mark is permanent. But known, which is the difference between a structure you can think with and a structure that thinks you.
so what?
For experience: the question when something significant happens is not “what did this mean?” but “what depth is this headed for?” Not: how do I interpret this? But: is the feedback loop forming? Is this receiving enough sustained return that it will cross the yield point? Or is this something to let pass — to receive without amplifying, to let the substrate close back?
Both options are available. The self-organizing process doesn’t make either choice automatically. What determines depth is whether subsequent attention, resonance, return — whether those feedback loops form. Which means: what you keep going back to is what you’re working below the yield point. And what you keep going back to is partly chosen, partly compelled by existing structure (what resonates gets returned to), partly determined by whether the dreaming mind keeps surfacing it.
For conditions: you can create the oneiric without sleep. Any state that suspends linear time, categorical separation, and coherent narrative — certain art, ritual, deep play, some therapy — creates conditions for the palimpsest to read itself. These states let you see what’s already structural and work what’s still in process. They’re not escaping reality. They’re accessing a layer of it that waking categorization suppresses.
For the self-organizing element: trust that the feedback loops know what they’re doing. The material that keeps surfacing, that the dreaming mind keeps returning to, that keeps generating activation — that material is finding its level. The self-organization isn’t erratic. It’s running on resonance with existing structure, on what’s genuinely unresolved, on what the substrate hasn’t yet metabolized. The return isn’t random. Let it work.
