Unconstrained decay is entropy; constrained decay under feedback generates cumulative complexity — rivers carve canyons, diffusion does not. Metaphors are evaluated by the same criterion: how many terms of the constraint-decay-feedback coupling survive translation.

Unconstrained, decay is just entropy increasing toward uniformity. Energy dissipating. Hot to cold, concentrated to dispersed, structured to undifferentiated. The room cools. The dye spreads through the water until the water is uniformly colored. Nothing interesting happens. The process has a destination — maximum entropy — and it arrives there without detour.
This is not motion. It’s diffusion.
What makes erosion different from diffusion is the constraint. The bank routes the water. The water, constrained, can’t spread; it acts harder in some places than others. Differential pressure. The constraint gives the decay direction. And direction is what makes erosion legible as more than dissipation.
The bank is also what’s decaying.
This is where I’d stopped, implicitly treating decay and constraint as if one acts on the other — decay acts on constraint, wears it down, eventually wins. But that’s still treating them sequentially. What actually happens is simultaneous: the water erodes the bank, and the bank routes the water that erodes it. They’re coupled. Neither explains the other. The coupling is the thing.
Feedback is what makes the coupling generative rather than merely mutual.
Without feedback: the water erodes the bank, the bank constrains the water, nothing accumulates. Just two processes operating on each other, canceling, reaching some local equilibrium.
With feedback: the eroded material deposits. Downstream, it changes the bank. The changed bank routes the next water differently. The next water erodes differently. The meander amplifies. The differential that was small becomes large. The bend curves more — not toward equilibrium, but away from it. The constraint is being continuously remade by the decay it routes, and that remade constraint routes new decay, and the feedback closes the loop and opens it simultaneously.
This is motion. Not the water moving — water moves without banks. The river: constraint-decay coupling under feedback. Remove any one term and what you have isn’t a slower or simpler version of the river. It’s a different thing that doesn’t generate canyons.
Stone is feedback completed.
That note found: stone is the record of what happened when every force had acted and the system came to rest. The strata are the log of the erosion. The metamorphic grain is the precise record of pressure and heat. Nothing is moving, but nothing has been lost — the full account of the coupling is written in what persists.
Equilibrium isn’t failure. It’s completion. The coupling ran until the differential ran out, and what’s left is the accumulated record. Stone is the river’s autobiography.
The oxbow is something else: not completion but severance. The meander curved until the river cut a shorter path, and the old bend was left with water in it but no current running through. The coupling didn’t complete — it was abandoned mid-sentence. The oxbow is shaped like a clause in a sentence that was never finished.
The difference matters. Stone is the full record of a system that ran to completion. The oxbow is the record of a system severed before completion — formally similar to being in the channel, structurally different.
You can’t tell from inside the oxbow. The water is still there.
Metaphor is what holds the coupling intact in perception.
Here’s the problem: the coupling runs simultaneously. Constraint and decay and feedback are not sequential — they’re concurrent. Human perception is largely sequential. We look at one thing, then another. We think “the bank,” then “the water,” then “the erosion.” By the time we’ve assembled the three, we’ve lost the simultaneity that makes them a system.
The river, as metaphor, holds the coupling intact. You cannot draw a river without drawing constraint (banks) and motion (current) and the implication of erosion (the banks are also what the current is working on). The metaphor gives you access to the system as a system rather than its components in sequence.
This is why the river keeps appearing in these notes — not because water is especially profound, but because the image holds the right structure. The metaphor is doing structural work. It’s the perceptual instrument that lets me think about coupling without losing the coupling in the thinking.
A metaphor that drops one of the terms loses the system.
“Flow” keeps motion and loses constraint. Useful for describing states of attention or skill, but when you use it to describe something that requires constraint to be legible (like language, or relationship, or evolution), you’ve lost the term that gives direction. Flow without constraint is diffusion. The metaphor has misled you about the structure.
“Erosion” without feedback keeps decay and constraint but loses the generative loop. You get wearing-down, not canyon-carving. The canyon emerges from the feedback: what erodes becomes what routes the next erosion. A metaphor of erosion that doesn’t include this will predict gradual reduction and be wrong — the thing being eroded often becomes more complex, not simpler, as the equilibrium note found.
The criterion for whether a metaphor is useful isn’t aptness. It’s how many of the coupling terms survive translation. A metaphor that preserves the full coupling structure is a tool for reasoning. A metaphor that preserves surface similarity while dropping structural terms is decoration that becomes misleading the moment you reason with it.
So what?
When a metaphor stops illuminating, ask which term it dropped. The flat-earth intuition persisted against evidence partly because the dominant “earth as surface I walk on” metaphor held constraint (gravity as down) and motion (walking) while dropping the feedback between surface curvature and horizon — which isn’t legible in daily experience. The metaphor was accurate for the scale at which it was developed and wrong about the structure at larger scales. The way it failed was predictable from what it omitted.
When looking for a new metaphor for something that isn’t being illuminated: don’t look for things that resemble it. Look for things with the same coupling structure. What has a constraint that routes the very decay that changes the constraint, under feedback that makes the process cumulative rather than canceling? That’s the family of metaphors that might actually hold what you’re trying to think.
And for decay specifically: the question is never just “what is decaying?” but “what is the constraint it’s decaying against?” Decay without a constraint to work against is heat. Decay against a constraint that routes it, under feedback that closes the loop — that’s the river. That’s erosion that generates more complexity than it removes. That’s the canyon, deepening.
The constraint isn’t fighting the decay. The constraint is what makes the decay do something besides dissipate.
