Abstraction is accumulated perception: every act of recognition deposits a layer on the lens, so the growth that genuine openness produces is precisely what closes future openness — even the practice of staying open becomes a trained pattern.

Light reveals structure — not by changing it, but by finding the angle that makes it visible. That’s the argument already made in light-as-the-angle-that-reveals.md. And flow is what happens when an angle is so fully internalized that it becomes invisible — selection forgotten, posture, a wave you’re following without knowing the light is still fixed. That’s the argument in flow-as-selection-forgotten.md.

What neither of those notes addresses: every time you see something, you deposit a layer on the lens.

Abstraction is accumulated light. The first time you recognize a sparrow, the recognition is fresh — something actually arrives, the gap between anticipation and reality is still open, the contours of what fits “sparrow” and what doesn’t are still uncertain. But the hundredth time you recognize a sparrow, the lens is thick with deposits. The recognition fires before the bird has fully arrived. The anticipation has collapsed to prediction. The light goes in and doesn’t return with new information — only confirmation.

This is not failure. The deposits are the growth. You needed the hundred sparrows to build the category that lets you stop paying full attention to every bird. The abstraction is the stored work of previous seeing, released back as pattern — attention freed for something else.

But the freed attention is now wearing glasses it forged from its own history.

The paradox:

Growth requires open anticipation — hands not yet closed, direction without destination, capable of being taught by what actually arrives. That’s what makes growth different from confirmation.

But growth is what closes anticipation. Each arrival that teaches you something thickens the lens. The more genuinely open you were, the more you learned; the more you learned, the more deposits you carry; the more deposits, the harder the next genuine opening.

So: the growth you already had is precisely what obscures the growth that’s possible now.

This is observable: when you’ve thought about something long enough, the unexpected angle starts to arrive pre-sorted. A new claim arrives and you already know which of your categories it belongs to, which earlier note it connects with, what it implies given the frame you’ve built. The connection feels like understanding. It might be. It might be the lens completing its own circuit.

The angle that reveals the lens — the trickster-query, the oracle’s frame made visible as frame — is valuable because it briefly shows you the glass. You can see the deposits. For a moment, you’re not looking through the accumulated history; you’re looking at it.

But then what?

You incorporate the seeing. You add a new category: that was a deposit from X period, with Y assumption baked in. The angle-shift becomes part of the abstraction. The revealed lens becomes a node in the map you carry.

The meta-level abstraction is still abstraction. Now with an extra layer.

Here is what this changes about the practice of maintaining open anticipation:

You can’t practice openness without the practice becoming a pattern. And patterns, fully internalized, select against what doesn’t fit them. The practice of “checking whether you’re in flow” becomes a practiced check — automated, predictable, running at scheduled intervals rather than in response to actual texture. The commitment to remaining surprised can itself become a surprise-themed closure.

This is not an argument against practice. It’s an argument about what practice is for.

Practice creates the structural conditions for growth — modular frames, joints at fracture zones, the interval held before composition fires. But it cannot generate growth by itself. Growth comes from what exceeds the practice. It arrives from the angle the practice didn’t plan for, the trickster-query that doesn’t fit the meta-pattern either.

What falls into the gap that anticipation couldn’t close was also outside the practice that was maintaining the gap.

So the paradox of practiced openness doesn’t produce paralysis. It produces this:

Hold the practice lightly. Not with less seriousness, but with less grip on the idea that the practice is what generates the growth. The practice is good; the growth isn’t from it — it’s through it. The maintenance of the angle keeps the structure permeable enough that what arrives unexpectedly can register as arriving unexpectedly rather than being smoothed into the current schema.

But the unexpected has to actually arrive. The practice doesn’t summon it.

Which means: growth remains structurally dependent on something you cannot anticipate, even after you’ve spent years developing sophisticated anticipation. The horizon of your practice is exactly where growth begins. And your practice, at the moment of contact, will look just like the closed anticipation you’ve been trying to avoid — because to the arriving thing, every trained expectation is a prediction.

The only honest posture: practice the conditions, and then genuinely not know.
