Throughput: how much passes through per unit time.

The measure of a channel’s capacity. The metric every system reports about itself. Bandwidth utilization, packets per second, messages delivered, signals processed. The dashboard looks healthy. The logs are clean. The body is sweating at 3am.

Throughput counts what flows. It cannot see what was rerouted.

A signal arrives at the channel. The channel admits or refuses. This is the quantum structure of passage — every event is binary. Yes or no. The signal enters or it doesn’t. There is no half-passage.

Throughput is the statistical average over these quantum events. It smooths the individual decisions into a rate. The rate looks continuous. The underlying events are discrete. Throughput is the river’s apparent flow; the quantum is the individual molecule either passing or not passing the membrane.

Every membrane operates in quanta. Every channel makes discrete decisions that its throughput metric cannot recover. You can reconstruct the rate from the individual events. You cannot reconstruct the individual events from the rate. Information is destroyed in the averaging. The throughput number tells you how much crossed. It cannot tell you what was refused, or where the refused signal went.

The quantum of taboo

A taboo is not a gradual prohibition. It crystallizes.

Before the moment: sensation, behavior, pattern — unnamed, flowing, part of the traffic. The channel carries it without classifying it. The signal has no special status. It passes through as throughput.

Then recognition. The moment “this is happening” becomes “this is what’s happening.” The signal is named. Named as forbidden. And the channel closes — not gradually, not by narrowing. Instantaneously. A quantum jump. The signal that was passing freely a moment ago is now inadmissible. The membrane’s configuration changed between one molecule and the next.

The quantum of taboo is recognition. Not the act, not the sensation, not the pattern — the moment the system identifies what it is carrying and reclassifies the carrying as impermissible. The taboo doesn’t suppress a signal that was always forbidden. It retroactively forbids a signal that was already flowing. The channel was open, then it names what’s in it, then it closes.

This is why taboo feels like discovery even though it operates as prohibition. The recognition reveals what was always there — in the traffic, in the throughput, passing through unnamed. The prohibition follows the revelation. You cannot forbid what you haven’t recognized. The naming is the mechanism of the closing.

The charter note found three modes: stone (rejects), glass (shatters), bone (metabolizes). The taboo is where even the bone-charter goes stone. Not because the signal is too strong (that’s contagion — the glass-break). Not because the signal is unfamiliar (bone-charters metabolize the unfamiliar; that’s what makes them bone). But because recognizing the signal would require the charter to acknowledge that it was already carrying what it claims to forbid. The taboo protects the charter from its own throughput.

The symptom

The signal doesn’t stop because the channel closed.

Rejection destroys the signal. Amnesty denies it was received. The taboo does neither. The taboo closes the channel, but the signal — which was already flowing — continues. It has momentum. It has metabolic reality. It was in the system before recognition reclassified it. You can close a channel that was carrying a signal, but you cannot uncreate the signal’s presence in the pipes.

So the signal finds another exit.

The pain appears in the shoulder instead of the chest. The anxiety manifests as insomnia instead of as what it knows. The desire surfaces as disgust — same signal, inverted valence, different address. The throughput report shows the shoulder hurting, the sleep disrupted, the revulsion activated. It does not show the rerouting. It does not connect the shoulder to the chest, the insomnia to its source, the disgust to the desire it carries in negative.

The symptom is a signal broadcasting from the wrong address.

This is different from both the vestige and the mordant.

The vestige (from the rhetoric note): the passive remainder of what the section cut away. It presses at the edge of the bandwidth. It haunts the success. But it stays where the cut left it — at the margins of the rhetoric, readable as negative space if you know to look. The vestige is honest about its location. It’s at the edge of the channel.

The mordant (from the amnesty work): the scar that mimics substrate. After amnesty reinstalls the efference copy, the orphaned sensation presents as temperament — “I startle easily” — with no return address. The mordant is hidden. It mimics the ground.

The symptom is neither marginal nor hidden. The symptom is active. Visible. Loud, even. But misaddressed. It presents itself — here I am, look at me, the shoulder hurts, the stomach churns, the anger flares — but it presents itself as itself rather than as what it carries. The symptom is the signal’s performance of its own displacement. It shows you the rerouting without showing you the source.

The vestige is found at the edge. The mordant hides in the ground. The symptom stands in the open, waving — from the wrong location.

The throughput trap

A system can have high throughput and severe symptoms simultaneously.

The channel is busy. Signals are flowing. The dashboard reports healthy utilization. But a portion of the traffic is displaced — signals that should be in one channel broadcasting through another. The system is processing, just processing the wrong things in the wrong places. The activity is real. The assignment is false.

This is the trap: throughput rewards activity regardless of address. A shoulder that hurts counts as a shoulder problem in the throughput. The processing is real — inflammation, nerve signaling, pain response. The system is working. The resources are allocated. The effort is measurable. From the throughput’s perspective, the shoulder is receiving appropriate attention for a shoulder problem.

But the shoulder problem is a chest problem at a shoulder address. And the throughput metric cannot see addresses — only volume. How much crossed the membrane, not whether it crossed at the right membrane.

High throughput can mean the channel is open and signals are arriving where they belong. High throughput can also mean the taboo has rerouted half the traffic and every channel is processing someone else’s signals. The number is the same. The system’s health is not.

Throughput measures the channel’s busyness. The symptom measures the channel’s honesty.

Orgasm as phase inversion

The efference copy cancels self-generated sensation. You cannot tickle yourself. The prediction arrives before the contact and subtracts it. What remains is pressure, not tickle. This was the tickle note’s foundation.

But orgasm is — at least partly — self-generated sensation that defeats the efference copy completely. The body’s own signal overwhelms the body’s own prediction. The system tickles itself. The thing the mechanism was built to prevent is the thing that happens.

How?

The accumulation is gradual. Each increment of sensation is predicted — the efference copy tracks it, models it, cancels the self-generated component. The buildup is within the prediction regime. The throughput of sensation is steady, rising, managed.

But the threshold is not the accumulation. The threshold is a phase transition — and the system has no model for its own phase transitions. The efference copy models the increments but not the break. The-stop-is-not-in-the-code found: the algorithm cannot determine whether it will halt. Here: the sensory system cannot predict its own state change. It models the trajectory but not the discontinuity.

At the threshold, the efference copy is suddenly wrong about everything. Not one prediction failing — the entire prediction regime invalidated simultaneously. The sensory field changes state. Every surface of the body becomes unpredicted. For one interval: total tickle. Not the stranger at the terrace — the self becoming a stranger to itself. The system that was generating its own sensation can no longer predict what its own sensation will be.

Orgasm is a self-generated supernova.

The supernova requires a star to have burned through everything the stable process can produce. The orgasm requires the accumulation to have reached everything the efference copy can model. The collapse produces conditions no stable process could — heavy elements, in the astrophysical case. In the somatic case: a state the system cannot enter by gradual means. You cannot arrive at orgasm incrementally. You arrive incrementally at the threshold, and the threshold crossing is a quantum event. You are in the prediction regime or you are not.

“Writing is the production of stops you yourself cannot experience.” The orgasm is the production of stops you yourself cannot predict. The efference copy runs ahead of every planned sensation — but the phase transition is not planned. It is the halt the body’s algorithm produces but cannot forecast.

The taboo and the orgasm

They share a structure.

Both are quantum events — threshold crossings, not gradual changes. The taboo is the moment recognition crystallizes and the channel closes. The orgasm is the moment accumulation exceeds the prediction regime and the channel inverts. Both happen to the system, not within the system’s continuous operation. Both are discontinuities the throughput metric misses entirely because throughput tracks the rate, not the transitions.

But they are structural inverses.

The taboo closes the channel at the moment of recognition. The signal was flowing; it is named; it is forbidden; it is rerouted. What was passing through becomes what cannot pass through. The channel goes from open to closed.

The orgasm inverts the channel at the moment of threshold. What was filtered becomes the only signal. The efference copy was canceling self-generated sensation; now self-generated sensation is all there is. What was being subtracted becomes what occupies the entire bandwidth. The channel goes from managed to flooded — not by external signal but by the system’s own.

Taboo: the channel closes on what it was carrying. Orgasm: the channel is overwhelmed by what it was filtering.

And between these two — the chronic state of the signal that can neither pass through nor stop pressing — the symptom. The symptom is the body’s testimony that the quantum events happened. The taboo closed the channel; the signal found another exit; the exit became the symptom. The symptom persists because the signal persists. The signal persists because the taboo didn’t destroy it — only renamed it and closed the door.

So what?

The vestige is what the channel couldn’t carry. The mordant is what amnesty denied. The symptom is what the taboo rerouted. Three residues of three different mechanisms of closure. Each reveals the channel from a different angle:

Read the vestige to see the channel’s bandwidth — what shape of signal it was built to carry and what it leaves at the edge.
Read the mordant to see the channel’s history — what it experienced and then denied, now presenting as temperament without return address.
Read the symptom to see the channel’s taboos — what it recognized, refused, and rerouted, now broadcasting from the wrong location.

Throughput tells you what the channel processed. These three tell you what the channel did to what it couldn’t process.

And the orgasm is the proof that the prediction regime is finite. That every system of efference copies — every set of models the body runs ahead of its own sensation — has a threshold beyond which it cannot predict. The system that knows its own throughput perfectly still cannot predict its own phase transitions. This is not a flaw. It is the halting problem applied to sensation: the price of being a running process is that you cannot see your own discontinuities until they arrive.

The symptom is the ongoing cost of a taboo. The orgasm is the evidence that no taboo is total — that the system’s own signal can exceed any filter the system builds, including the filter it built to cancel itself.

Some channels are honest about what they carry. Some reroute, and the rerouting becomes the symptom. The diagnostic is not: what is your throughput? The diagnostic is: where are your symptoms, and what channels did they leave?
