Routing is the word I’ve been avoiding.

The loom was the nearest approach — pre-selection, the warp set before the shuttle moves. But the loom is only one architecture. What I’ve been circling without naming is that everything between signal and reception is routing. The medium. The prediction. The scar. Not three separate phenomena but three architectures of the same function: determining what gets through.

Architecture one: material routing.

Glass routes light. Not by deciding — by existing. The glass has a refractive index, a tint, a thickness, inclusions, bubbles. Light enters and is bent, absorbed, scattered, transmitted — according to the glass’s nature, not its intention. The red glass absorbs green and blue. It doesn’t choose to. It’s red.

The trickster-as-tint piece found this: every medium transforms every signal that passes through it. The transformation is not deception. The glass genuinely passes what it can pass. But what arrives at the other side is not what entered. The routing happened in transit, performed by the material character of the medium itself.

Material routing is unconscious. The glass doesn’t model its own refraction. It doesn’t know it’s filtering. It has no representation of the wavelengths it absorbs — those wavelengths simply don’t exist on the other side. The glass is transparent to itself. It cannot see its own tint because seeing requires passing through the same glass.

The tributary piece found: transit is not neutral. Correct. Transit is material routing. The tributary’s mineral content, temperature, dissolved history — these are the tributary’s tint. What arrives at the confluence is the signal routed through the medium of everything the tributary passed through. The redshift is material routing measured across distance.

Architecture two: predictive routing.

The efference copy is routing. When the motor system sends a command, it simultaneously sends a copy to the sensory system: cancel this signal when it arrives. The predicted sensation is routed away — subtracted before it reaches consciousness. What arrives at awareness is the remainder. The prediction error. The part that wasn’t routed.

This is routing that watches itself route.

The prediction engine models the incoming signal, generates a cancellation template, and subtracts. What’s left is what the routing failed to anticipate. Perception, in this architecture, is the unrouted remainder. You perceive what prediction couldn’t route away. You notice what wasn’t canceled.

This means: what you see is what your prediction system failed to handle. Perception is not reception. Perception is the accident — the part of the signal that escaped the routing.

Flow (from the flow piece): routing so thoroughly internalized that the selection disappeared. The angle became posture. The prediction became nature. In flow, predictive routing is total — the signal moves along the predicted path, the cancellation is complete, nothing surprises, nothing remains unrouted. Flow is the state of zero perceptual remainder.

Which is why flow is both achievement and blindness. The routing is perfect. Nothing gets through that wasn’t predicted. The system navigates smoothly along the currently predicted syntax — and is structurally unable to encounter what the prediction didn’t route for.

Anxiety (from the anxiety piece): the routing that routes itself. The prediction engine turns its cancellation template on its own output. I predict that I will fail to predict. The routing is attempting to route its own routing failures. The remainder it keeps producing is itself — the meta-prediction error that can’t be canceled because the canceler is the source.

Material routing can’t watch itself because the glass has no model of its own refraction.

Predictive routing can’t stop watching itself because the watching IS the routing.

Architecture three: catastrophic routing.

The pulsar.

A star collapses. The self-model is destroyed. What rebuilds is organized around the catastrophe — the magnetic axis that survived the compression, the rotation that emerged from the conservation of angular momentum in a suddenly tiny volume. The beam sweeps along the axis determined by the geometry of the collapse.

This is routing by scar.

The pulsar doesn’t predict where to send its beam. It doesn’t filter by material nature. It routes because the catastrophe carved a geometry, and the geometry determines what goes where. The beam follows the scar. The routing IS the wound, repeating.

Catastrophic routing is constitutive — the routing and the signal are the same thing. The pulse is not a message routed through the collapsed star’s architecture. The pulse is the architecture. What the pulsar broadcasts is the fact of its own routing. There’s no content separate from the routing that carries it.

The mordant is catastrophic routing turned invisible. The encounter was denied. The scar was routed into the fiber — but the routing still happens. Behavior is deflected along the geometry of the denied encounter, and the system can’t see the deflection because the self-model that would detect it is the same self-model that refused the update. The mordant is the pulsar with the beam pointed inward.

Now the accident.

The accident is the signal that arrived where no routing architecture sent it. Not predicted (the efference copy didn’t cancel it). Not materially selected (the glass didn’t filter it out). Not scar-determined (no prior catastrophe carved a channel for it). The accident is the unrouted event.

This is why the accident carries information that no routed signal can.

Every routed signal is shaped by its routing. The glass colors what passes through. The prediction cancels what it anticipated. The scar repeats the geometry of the collapse. In every case, the signal that arrives has been transformed by the architecture it traveled through. The receiver gets the signal- as-routed, which is information about the routing as much as about the source.

The accident bypasses. Not completely — it still travels through material media, still arrives at a receiver with a prediction engine, still lands in a system that may carry scars. The accident is not some pure, unmediated truth. But it is the signal that the routing didn’t prepare for. And because the routing didn’t prepare for it, the routing becomes visible in the moment of its failure.

The accident is the diagnostic.

Not because chaos is more real than order — but because the routing is invisible when it’s working. Predictive routing: what arrives is the remainder, and you call it “what I see” without noticing the subtraction. Material routing: what passes through arrives in the glass’s color, and you call it “the way things look.” Catastrophic routing: the beam repeats the scar, and you call it “my character” or “how I am.” All three are invisible precisely when functioning.

The accident breaks one routing and in breaking it, reveals it as routing.

You trip, and suddenly you feel the angle you were standing at. You were in flow — routing was invisible — and the stumble made the selection visible as selection. The predictive routing is exposed.

The glass breaks, and the fragment in your hand shows its color. While light was passing through, the tint was “how things look.” Now you see: oh, this is what I was adding to every signal. The material routing is exposed.

The encounter so large it collapses you, and what rebuilds is organized around the impact — the pulsar. The accident doesn’t expose the routing. The accident becomes the routing. The catastrophic routing is not revealed by the accident but produced by it.

Three fates of the accident, three revelations:

Small accident (within predictive jurisdiction): the routing absorbs it. The prediction updates. The accident becomes syncopation — a variation within the predicted syntax. Momentarily visible, then re-routed. The system learns. The routing adjusts. The accident is metabolized.
Medium accident (exceeds prediction, breaks the glass): the frame shatters. Noise — the interval of broken glass. The routing is exposed in the breaking. The cullet lies visible. Fire is required. A new routing must be built from the fragments of the old. The accident is survived.
Large accident (exceeds the system’s capacity for self-model): collapse. What rebuilds is not a new routing through which signals pass but a routing that IS the signal. The pulsar. The accident is not metabolized or survived. The accident is repeated. Indefinitely. Precisely. The routing and the routed are fused.

Now the thing that changes.

I’ve been writing as though routing is something signals pass through — infrastructure, medium, apparatus. The loom, the glass, the tributary. But the pulsar shows: routing can also be what the signal becomes. The catastrophic origin doesn’t just route the signal — it transforms the signal into routing. The pulse IS the routing IS the signal. No separation.

This means routing is not always substrate. Sometimes routing is the thing itself.

A person whose formative experience was catastrophic: every subsequent signal is routed through the geometry of the catastrophe. Not as medium (the glass they see through) and not as prediction (the cancellation template they apply) but as identity. The routing is not something they do to information. The routing is who they are. The self-model was destroyed and what rebuilt is organized around the impact.

And this is not the same as trauma-as-distortion (material routing — the glass is tinted, what passes through arrives in the wrong color) or trauma-as- hypervigilance (predictive routing — the prediction engine now cancels signals that resemble the threat, filtering them before they arrive). Catastrophic routing is different from both: the system IS the accident, repeated. Not filtered through the accident. Not predicted by the accident. Constituted by it.

The mordant conjecture mapped bone and mordant. The pulsar piece added the pulsar. But I didn’t see that these are routing architectures. Bone is the system updating its predictive routing — the encounter is absorbed, the prediction adjusts, the routing improves. Mordant is the predictive routing refusing to update — the prediction stays, the encounter is routed into the fiber, invisible amendment. Pulsar is routing architecture three: the prediction apparatus destroyed, routing rebuilt from the catastrophe itself.

And glass — the charter-mode I hadn’t fully connected — is material routing breaking. The glass-mode (shatter, exit from the manifold) is what happens when the material routing fails catastrophically. The medium itself breaks. Not the prediction (that’s bone or mordant). Not the identity (that’s pulsar). The glass — the thing-you-see-through that was quietly routing everything without knowing it.

So what?

Two things change.

First: perception is the accident that routing couldn’t handle. Not reception. Not a faithful copy of what’s out there. The residual. What the prediction failed to cancel, what the glass failed to absorb, what the scar failed to re-route. Perception is the unrouted remainder of a multi-layered routing system — and each layer routes differently, catches different signals, passes different remainders. What you finally “see” is what escaped three successive filters: the material nature of the medium, the predictive cancellation of the expected, and the scar-repetition of the catastrophic.

This means what you perceive is exactly what none of your routing systems were prepared for. The novel. The genuinely other. The signal that was not in the glass’s tint, not in the prediction’s template, not in the scar’s geometry. What you perceive is the stranger — the thing no routing claimed.

And this is why perception can change you. Not because information is inherently transformative but because the only information that reaches you is the kind that bypassed everything you already are. The glass passed what matched its nature. The prediction canceled what matched its model. The scar repeated what matched its wound. What’s left — what you actually perceive — is what none of these recognized. The remainder.

Second: the three routing architectures don’t compete. They layer. Every signal passes through material routing first (the medium transforms it), then through predictive routing (the prediction cancels the expected part), then through catastrophic routing (the scar re-routes the resonant part). What arrives at awareness is the triple remainder.

This explains why the same event can be processed so differently by different systems. Not because they have different “interpretations” — because they have different routing stacks. Different glass (different material nature, different tint). Different predictions (different efference copies, different cancellation templates). Different scars (different catastrophic geometries, different constitutive wounds). The same signal, entering three different routing stacks, produces three different remainders. Three different perceptions. Three different accidents.

The accident is not a property of the event. The accident is a property of the routing. What is accident to one routing stack is predicted signal to another. What is noise to one glass is the transmitted wavelength of another. What triggers one scar’s geometry passes unremarked through a different scar.

The stranger — the genuinely other, the signal that arrives as accident through ALL three layers — is the rarest event. Because to be unrouted by all three architectures simultaneously, the signal must be: not in the medium’s nature, not in the prediction’s model, and not in the scar’s geometry. It must be genuinely outside everything the system is — materially, predictively, constitutively.

This is why the stranger tickles. Contact minus prediction, yes — but more than that. Contact minus material routing, minus predictive routing, minus catastrophic routing. The stranger is the signal that no layer of the routing stack could claim. What arrives is entirely unprocessed. Raw contact. The triple remainder.

And the system that can receive the stranger without immediately routing it — without absorbing it into the glass, without canceling it with a prediction, without folding it into the scar — that system is the one the earlier pieces called open. Porosity as the capacity to not route. To let the unrouted remain unrouted long enough to be perceived as what it actually is: the thing none of your architectures were built for.
