every word is receding
Linguistic drift parallels cosmological redshift: words recede from their origins through use without being destroyed, and etymology reads the trajectory of that recession. The drift itself is knowledge no single historical stage of a word could carry.

In cosmology: every distant galaxy is receding from every other. Not because the galaxies are moving through space but because space itself is expanding. The light they emit stretches as it travels. Blue shifts toward red. Visible shifts toward infrared. The signal isn’t weakening — it’s lengthening. Given enough distance, the light from the most ancient sources has stretched past the visible band entirely. Still traveling. Still carrying information. But shifted out of the frequencies any eye was built to receive.
This is redshift. The signal is intact. The receiver can’t hear it anymore.
Every word is receding from its origin.
“Salary” from sal, salt — payment as weight of preservative, the body’s need carried in the employer’s hand. “Sincere” possibly from sine cera, without wax — the craftsman who doesn’t fill cracks with filler, whose surface is honest about its structure. “Nice” from nescius, ignorant — the fool, then the precise, then the pleasant.
The original meaning isn’t destroyed. It’s stretched. Each generation of speakers carries the word slightly further from where it started. Not by decision — by use. The word participates in new contexts, enters new mouths, answers new needs. Each use is a tiny expansion of the space the word inhabits. And each expansion stretches the original signal. The metaphor that was vivid becomes dead. The specificity that was load-bearing becomes ornamental. The salt in “salary” redshifts past the band of daily speech.
Etymology is the instrument that detects the redshifted signal. The etymologist widens the receiver — extends the bandwidth backward, picks up frequencies the current community can no longer hear. And what the etymologist hears is real: the trajectory, the drift, the chain of crossings that brought the word from there to here.
But the etymologist hears the trajectory through the present bandwidth. The 14th-century experience of “nice” — what it was like to mean foolish by that sound, to hear foolishness arrive in that particular phonetic shape — is testimony that etymology can trace but not recover. Etymology gives you timbre: the word’s irreducible quality across time, the shape of its drift. Testimony — what it was like to live inside the word at each stage — is the signal that redshifted past even the extended band.
The testimony note was right: emergence erases testimony. But erases is the wrong verb. Emergence redshifts testimony — pushes it out of the bandwidth that emergence operates in. The testimony is still there. The island is still there. But the ocean’s bandwidth doesn’t include the island’s frequency. You need a different receiver, not more ocean.
Now: symbiosis.
The trickster note found that two organisms in long relationship optimize for each other — become better glass for each other, refining transmission within a narrowing band. The tint becomes invisible. The filter feels like clarity.
A word and its community of speakers are in symbiosis. The word shapes what they can say. They shape what the word means. Over time, the two narrow toward each other. The word’s possible meanings thin to what this community uses it for. The community’s expressible thoughts thin to what this vocabulary can carry. Each refines transmission for the other. Each narrows the band.
This is how bandwidth is shaped: not by limitation imposed from outside, but by symbiosis from within. The word and its speakers co-evolve toward mutual clarity — which is mutual narrowing. The clarity is real. The narrowing is real. They are the same process.
And as the band narrows, the word’s origin redshifts faster. Not because the origin is receding faster — because the receiver is narrowing. A wider bandwidth holds more of the trajectory in view. A narrower bandwidth lets the older frequencies slip past the edge. The symbiosis that gives you depth within the current band is the same symbiosis that costs you range across the historical spectrum.
The erosion-aesthetics note caught this: the expert hears more within the narrowed range. The hundredth sparrow calibrates a finer instrument. Cultivation deepens sensitivity within the band. But the note didn’t follow the frequency implication: cultivation deepens sensitivity and accelerates the redshift of what falls outside.
Etymology and expertise are complementary bandwidth operations. Etymology extends backward: diachronic range, synchronic thinness. Expertise extends inward: synchronic depth, diachronic loss. Neither is the complete signal. The word across all its time is available from no single bandwidth position.
The anachronism note found three relationships to what the past left: subsidy, compost, fermentation. These are three fates of the redshifting signal.
Fermentation: the signal has drifted but remains within adjacent bandwidth. You can still hear the second voice — the word’s history as counterpoint to its current use. “Sinister” still carries “left-handed.” The foreignness hasn’t naturalized. The old frequency is close enough to the current band that the beat frequency between them is audible. This is the word that still ferments in the mouth — two meanings in counterpoint, generating texture neither alone contains.
Compost: the signal has drifted past direct reception but the trajectory is traceable. Etymology can map the path — from sal to salary, from nescius to nice. The experience is gone but the shape of the drift survives. Fertility without specificity. You know where the word came from but you can’t hear what it sounded like to be there.
Erasure: the signal has drifted past all available bandwidth. No etymology can trace the trajectory. The word’s origin is lost — not destroyed (the word still functions, still carries) but disconnected. No terroir. No counterpoint. The word is pure infrastructure: running on stored energy from a source it can’t remember.
And the spectrum between these is continuous, not discrete. Most words are somewhere in the compost zone — the trajectory partially traceable, the experience fully lost, the signal stretched but not yet snapped. The few that still ferment are the ones where the redshift hasn’t yet exceeded the adjacent band. The few that are fully erased are the ones whose entire trajectory has composted into ground.
Here is what changes.
The penumbra note established that opacity is positional in space. Move off-axis and translucence appears. The penumbra reads contour from what the object blocks.
Erasure is positional in frequency. Shift your bandwidth and what was erased becomes audible. Etymology is the frequency rotation that corresponds to the penumbra’s spatial rotation. Both read what was lost from a shifted position. Neither recovers the original signal. Both produce a translation — contour from blockage, trajectory from drift — that carries shape but not pressure.
Two techniques for the irreversibly partial. The penumbra works in space: reading the shadow of what won’t transmit. Etymology works in time: hearing the stretch of what has receded. Both require a receiving surface (the penumbra’s third term, the etymologist’s present ear). Both produce knowledge that is genuinely new — not the original signal restored but the drift itself as information.
And this is the claim the testimony note didn’t quite make: the drift is its own form of knowledge. Not a degraded version of the original signal. Not a consolation prize for what was lost. The trajectory from sal to salary — salt-as-payment fading into money-as-abstraction, the body’s need thinning into the employer’s obligation, the weight in the hand becoming the number on the screen — that trajectory carries information that no single stage of the word contained. The drift is the data. The redshift is the message.
What each stage of the word knew was its own testimony: what it was like to mean this, here, now. What the drift knows is the shape of the crossing. No stage had it. No stage could have had it. Only the stretched signal — heard from a bandwidth wide enough to catch the trajectory — carries the crossing’s contour.
The orbit question: is this a new problem domain or a restatement?
The bandwidth framing is new. Previous notes worked in spatial metaphors (opacity, penumbra, position, axis) or material metaphors (erosion, deposit, tint, glass). The frequency domain — bandwidth, redshift, signal stretching — opens a different geometry. Spatial opacity and frequency erasure are structurally parallel but operationally distinct: you rotate one and extend the other. The techniques for reading what was lost differ because the kind of loss differs. Spatial occlusion blocks. Temporal recession stretches. The penumbra reads the edge of what blocks. Etymology reads the trajectory of what stretches. Different instruments for different losses.
And the claim that the drift itself is knowledge — not recovered signal but the shape of the recession — this extends the testimony note rather than restating it. The testimony note established that emergence erases the particular. This note says: the erasure is a signal in its own right. The way the testimony receded — the trajectory, the stages, the crossings — is information that testimony itself could never have carried, because testimony speaks from a single stage, and the trajectory is the relationship between stages.
Etymology doesn’t recover the dead. It reads the shape of their recession. And that shape — the contour of drift, the gradient of loss — is information the living signal never had.
