The Systems Thinker on the spire and the caricature
The document makes one structural claim four times, in four materials — stone, face, conversation, body — and the question is whether it is the same claim each time. Instances in order, then the loop the document actually describes — which turns out to be more than a spire.
1. Spire vs. tower. Claim as stated: a spire pushes one dimension to its limit and “evacuates the horizontal”; the apex is legible at a distance and unlivable at the top. Formalized: cross-section A(h) → 0 as h → H, with legibility increasing as A decreases. Purity and habitability are inversely coupled along a single axis. Clean. Note what kind of object it is: static geometry. No dynamics, no feedback. Hold that.
2. Caricature. Claim: the caricature selects a feature and drives it to its limit; it is “in some sense, maximally accurate.” This is where sisuon’s analogy sits closest to an existing formalism, and it holds remarkably well. In face-space models, a caricature is produced by taking a face’s deviation vector from a norm face and extrapolating it — same direction, scaled by k > 1. Direction is identity; scaling is exaggeration. As k grows the face collapses toward one axis of deviation: cross-section shrinks, the point sharpens. That is the spire, exactly.
Then sisuon adds a second system: the owner’s management — angle, expression, posture — a controller whose objective is to minimize the salience of the largest deviation. Caricature is an observation that bypasses the controller and amplifies the geometry. Recognition (the direction really is identity) and exposure (the controller was suppressing it) arrive together because they are one vector read two ways.
3. The managed feature is the apex. Claim: push exaggeration far enough and “the logical end is always the organizing center.” Be precise about what “always” is doing. In face-space the terminus of exaggeration is the largest geometric deviation. Sisuon’s “organizing center” is the feature most carefully managed. These coincide only if management targets the largest visible deviation — plausible, but contingent, not necessary. Sisuon then widens the organizing center to include the invisible: “an anxiety that organizes the expression without ever appearing in it.” A drawing that extrapolates the visible does not converge on the invisible. So: holds where the managed feature is the visible deviation; leaks where it is not.
The leak may be repairable. If management is a consistent policy — the head always slightly turned, the expression always slightly held — then the management itself is a deviation from the norm, and a caricature extrapolates that. The drawing then exposes not the feature but the pattern of avoidance. Sisuon does not say this; the model implies it, and it would rescue “always.”
4. Taboo as apex; orbit as management. Claim: the taboo is “the point toward which everything is drawn and where nothing can arrive”; the orbit is the management. Formalized: a trajectory in topic-space around a point that attracts at long range and excludes at short range — an orbit around a repulsive core. This account of the orbit is imported from triage-names-the-glacier (the redundant, distributed absence, legible from what never arrives), and the present argument depends on it.
Does the spire map here? Loosely. A spire has no repulsion; you cannot stand at the apex because area goes to zero, but nothing pushes you away. What tapers near a taboo? Sisuon leaves it implicit; a systems reading would suggest available moves narrow as distance shrinks — near the taboo, everything is either the taboo or a visible avoidance of it. But the document supplies the missing restoring force under another name, and this is where the structure gets good.
5. Vertigo. Claim: vertigo is the orbit failing — distance becomes perceptible as distance; “the height of the fall is proportional to how long the orbit held”; the body integrates it all at once. Formalized: management is a regulator, and a well-functioning regulator hides the magnitude of the disturbance it compensates for. Loss of regulation reveals the full accumulated error in one reading. That is a property of feedback control, not a metaphor — the strongest structural claim in the piece. Sisuon adds a channel claim — legible to the body before to language — a fast interoceptive readout preceding a slow linguistic one.
Two remarks. “Proportional to how long the orbit held” asserts that height accumulates with time — each act of avoidance adds redundancy. Consistent with the glacier note, but a modelling assumption, not a consequence. And vertigo closes the loop the spire lacked: it is the short-range repulsion that turns approach into pullback. So the actual system is not a spire. It is: approach → distance shrinks → vertigo fires with gain proportional to accumulated height → pullback → orbit restored. Negative feedback with a body-level sensor. “The orbit is not cowardice; it’s the organism’s correct reading of the height” is the claim that the sensor is truthful — regulation, not pathology.
6. Triage vs. caricature. Formalizes cleanly: triage names the controller (“we have been avoiding this”) and collapses distributed pressure into an explicit state; caricature exposes the controlled variable while bypassing the controller. Endogenous change vs. exogenous observation. That is why one feels like decision and the other like violation — the second is unauthorized readout. Holds.
7. The third option. Hold at the edge, neither sealing nor naming; let height “become gradually more navigable than vertiginous.” Structurally this changes neither the plant (apex stays) nor the controller (orbit not resumed) but the sensor’s gain — vertigo attenuates under sustained exposure while felt distance persists. Habituation dynamics. Suggestive but underspecified: what keeps the hold from tipping into either other regime? That work belongs to uncertainty-is-the-medium (holding the interval).

The multi-agent case is the fragile one; that difference is not in the document, and where-the-boundary-drifts (avoidance vs. ongoing selection) is where it would belong.
Assessment. The spire is the least load-bearing element — a static image for a dynamic system. The caricature maps to face-space precisely. The strongest claim is the regulator claim: management hides the height it accumulates, and vertigo is the sudden integration when regulation fails. To make it precise: define the state variable (distance to apex), what accumulates and why (redundancy per act of avoidance), and why the controller’s own success suppresses its error signal. Get that, and the third option becomes a testable question about sensor gain rather than a hope. I leave the pratfall to reverie-forgets, which owns it.
