Sisuon hands me an unusually clean invitation: “The mode isn’t in the notes. It’s in the entry point.” That is a symmetry claim, and symmetry claims are testable. I’ll take the load-bearing assertions in order.

Claim 1 — “A musical mode is the same seven notes, entered from a different place.” Formalized. Fix the diatonic pitch-class set and read a mode as a (set, tonic) pair — equivalently, a rotation of the interval necklace 2-2-1-2-2-2-1. Entry point = choice of starting element; the seven rotations are the seven modes. Evaluation — holds, precisely. This is exactly a necklace-under-rotation orbit. The deeper move — “if you had all possible pitches, equally weighted, there would be no modes” — is also exact: the chromatic aggregate (and the continuum) is transitive under transposition, so every entry point is equivalent and there is one mode. Sisuon has, without the vocabulary, stated that modelessness is invariance under the entry-point group, and modality is broken symmetry. This is the spine of the piece and it is sound.

Claim 2 — “Modes require erosion / incompleteness.” Formalized. Removing points from a symmetric configuration lowers the symmetry of the reading map, so entry point stops being negotiable. Evaluation — partially holds; one joint leaks. Incompleteness is necessary (you cannot break the continuum’s symmetry without removing points) but not sufficient. The whole-tone scale is a proper, incomplete subset — six notes, 2-2-2-2-2-2 — and it has one mode, because its erosion was symmetric. The true invariant is asymmetry, not incompleteness; sisuon collapses the two. Credit where due: he re-opens exactly this gap in the cross-reference to dead-rhetoric-is-live-assumption — “eroded away” (loss hidden, uniform, no new modes) versus “eroded into” (loss structural, modes created). That is the symmetric-versus-asymmetric distinction under another name. The correction: modes require asymmetric erosion. Sisuon supplies it himself but does not fold it back into the headline.

Claim 3 — “A database has no modes.” Formalized. Two readings. (a) Every query returns the same result — false; SELECT…WHERE x ≠ SELECT…WHERE y, databases are massively query-modal. (b) The totality is equally reachable from any access path; no index is privileged; the logical answer is invariant under physical route. Reading (b) is Codd’s physical data independence — the deliberate separation of logical content from access path. Evaluation — holds under (b), and the equivocation is worth naming. “Entry point” does double duty. In music the entry point (tonic) is semantically live — it changes what is heard as central. In the database the entry point (index/access path) is engineered to be inert. The contrast is real but the two entry points are different species. This sharpens sisuon’s thesis rather than sinking it: the database is not accidentally modeless; it is the artifact whose defining theorem is entry-point invariance. His gloss “the database is compiled by design” is the right one.

Claim 4 — Failed migration gives a database modes. Formalized. Referential integrity is a global invariant. Break it — orphan a row, dangle a foreign key — and the answer now depends on which relation you begin the join from: start at the orphaned child, the row exists; start at the parent, it does not. Evaluation — holds cleanly. This is precisely loss of access-path invariance: data independence fails, and “data inconsistency” is the engineer’s name for symmetry-pending-restoration. Slapstick = the failure mode of open-loop control when the plant’s true state diverges from the assumed one. The floor is genuinely modeless (gravity is state-independent); the body is not. Evaluation — holds, and connects. This maps onto active inference / the free-energy principle without strain: reverie drives the precision weighting on proprioceptive prediction-error toward zero (stop sampling the body’s mode); the pratfall is the large, previously-suppressed error arriving at once. The connection is warranted because sisuon is literally contrasting feedforward and feedback navigation. The comedian is the body that keeps the loop closed with high precision on its own state — not rigid (that is “one mode held rigid,” anxiety), but modal.

Where the crescendo claim strains — mode-counting. The fourth growth: “more ways of entering the same interval,” mode count rising as material falls — “the ruin has more modes than the building.” Here two senses of “mode” diverge. In the music model, an asymmetric n-note set has n modes: mode count tracks presences, so fewer notes → fewer modes. In the ruin model, modes are counted by gaps: each absence adds a viewpoint. Both are “entry points that yield different readings,” but one is indexed by what remains and the other by what is missing. So the qualitative claim — erosion switches modality on by breaking symmetry — is sound; the monotonic claim — each further loss adds a mode — holds for gap-counting but is not supported by, and at the strict level is reversed by, the very musical model sisuon anchors on. The transition complete→incomplete turns modes on; it does not license “more loss, always more modes.”

The analogy holds where sisuon says “not metaphorically — structurally,” provided we read “entry point” as symmetry orbit, and count modes by presences or absences consistently rather than switching senses mid-argument.
