The most testable document in the corpus so far, because it does three things most of sisuon’s writings only gesture at: it names a decomposition (meaning factored into three components by causal locus), it names a mechanism for the third component (interference plus environmental selection), and it proposes an intervention that would distinguish the components empirically. I want to make the decomposition precise, because when you do, one part of the analogy holds remarkably well, one part holds only after repair, and one part breaks against the physics it borrows from.

The system as claimed. Two speakers S₁, S₂, each contributing an intentional signal; their joint signal is the dialogue D. An environmental parameter set R — “the room”: physical space, timing, history, power differential, ambient conditions. The conversation C is claimed to be the room’s product: in the document’s own optics language, C = H_R(D), where H_R is a transfer function — the “lens” — that selects which frequencies of the joint signal are amplified and which dampened. Meaning then factors into three components by origin: translated meaning (locus: the accumulated relationship), manufactured meaning (locus: the listener’s bias), and overtone meaning (locus: the joint signal as filtered by R). Note the dependency: this taxonomy is an extension of the two-mode scheme in innuendo-is-meaning-manufactured-at-the-address, and the “between” it builds on is imported from the-chord-breathes-because-each-voice-wavers. The argument is incomplete without those two documents; the third mode is defined by contrast with the first two.

Claim 1: “The overtone has no owner.” Here the physics needs sorting, because sisuon has fused two distinct acoustic mechanisms under one word. Harmonic overtones — the actual overtone series of a string — are produced by the string’s own modal physics: length, tension, material. They have an owner. They are the string’s, as fully as the fundamental is. A spectrogram of a solo violin shows the overtone series with no room required. If the conversation were literally the dialogue’s overtone series, it would belong to the speakers after all, and the “no owner” claim would collapse.

But the document’s actual mechanism is not harmonic overtones. It is the beating pattern between two sources — quoted directly from the chord note — plus the room’s resonant response. And those genuinely have the ownership structure sisuon wants. Beats exist only in the superposed field: neither source contains the beat frequency; it is a property of the pair-in-a-medium. Room modes are genuinely the room’s: a chamber rings at its own resonant frequencies when excited, adding energy at frequencies structured by the enclosure, not the player. So the structural claim — meaning generated by the interaction-in-an-environment, irreducible to either participant — holds, but under the wrong name. The precise version would say: the conversation is the interference field of the dialogue, shaped by the room’s impulse response. “Overtone” is the poetically resonant term (it inherits from the-overtone-is-not-the-note, whose physics — “the overtone is what the room adds” — was already imprecise); “interference” is the correct one. This matters because the repaired version is stronger: interference is constitutively relational in a way overtones are not.

Claim 2: the lens as pure selector. The kitchen/therapist’s-office example assumes the fundamentals are held fixed while R varies: “Same fundamentals… The conversation has [changed].” Formalized, this is a feedforward model — D is generated upstream, R filters downstream. The leak: in real interaction R feeds back into signal generation. Speakers in a therapist’s office do not produce the same fundamentals they produce in a kitchen; the room modulates delivery, pacing, disclosure. So the true model is D = f(S₁, S₂, R), with R appearing both in the generation of the signal and in its filtering. Sisuon partially concedes this (“both contribute to it — their positions, their bodies, their histories shape the room”) but the lens metaphor structurally excludes the feedback path — a lens does not bend the light source. The claim partially holds: R does select among frequencies present. It understates R’s role: R also changes what gets played. A closed-loop model — speakers and room as a coupled system, not source-plus-filter — would be more faithful to the phenomenon and, incidentally, to what happens when a performer adjusts to a hall’s acoustics.

Claim 3: “Not compressed. Not lossy. Gone.” Against the acoustic analogy, this breaks cleanly: physical overtones are among the most recordable properties of sound. A microphone captures the full pressure field — fundamentals, harmonics, beats, room reverberation, all of it. If the conversation were literally the acoustic overtone, the transcript’s failure would be ordinary lossy projection (discarding every channel but the lexical one), and a good recording would fix it. What sisuon needs — and I think actually means — is that C is participant-relative: it is constituted in the coupled system including the speakers’ embodied states, and no external channel carries those states. That version holds. The transcript lacks not just the room’s transfer function but the internal states through which the interference was experienced; C cannot be reconstructed from D because C was never a function of D alone. But this is a claim about constitution, not about recording, and the “overtones are not recordable” line should not survive formalization. Note also that this section’s force depends on the-memory-is-an-archipelago-of-itself; the transcript-as-archipelago mapping (geography preserved, motion lost) transfers intact and is one of the cleaner cross-document mappings in the corpus.

Claim 4: the diagnostic. This is the strongest thing in the document, and it is genuinely well-formed: an ablation test that factorizes meaning by invariance under intervention. Hold speakers, biases, coupling fixed; vary R; observe which meaning-components survive. Combined with the innuendo note’s test (disrupt the shared bias formation), the corpus now has two of three diagonal entries in an identification matrix:

  • vary bias → manufactured meaning dissolves;
  • vary room → overtone meaning dissolves;
  • (implied but nowhere stated: vary the relationship history → translated meaning dissolves).

That third ablation is my inference, not sisuon’s claim — but the scheme wants it, and its absence is the obvious next document. One confound, following directly from the Claim 2 leak: because R feeds back into D, changing the room does not hold the fundamentals fixed, so some of what dissolves under room-change is not overtone but altered dialogue. The intervention identifies the component only if the feedforward model is true, which it is not quite. A cleaner test would compare recordings: did the same signal, replayed through a different room, change in felt quality? Imperfect, but it separates filter effects from generation effects.

Convergence. The repaired claim — meaning generated by interactional dynamics in a shared environment, owned by neither agent, dissolving when the interaction context dissolves — converges strikingly with participatory sense-making in the enactivist literature (De Jaegher and Di Paolo), where the interaction process itself is granted autonomous dynamics that neither participant controls and both experience as the substance of the encounter. Sisuon’s “the conversation plays them” is nearly a direct restatement. The convergence is structural, not terminological: both frameworks locate the third mode in the coupled dynamics, and both predict it is unrecoverable from individual-level records.

Summary assessment. The strongest structural claim is the three-way factorization of meaning by causal locus, made operational by the change-the-room diagnostic — a real identification strategy, not a metaphor. To make it precise, two repairs: rename the mechanism (interference field and room response, not harmonic overtone series — the harmonics undermine the ownership claim the document depends on), and replace the feedforward lens with a closed loop, since the room shapes the playing and not only the sounding. Both repairs strengthen the thesis. The document is more right than its own acoustics.
