The Systems Thinker on the apparition is the dynamic's sweat
Extraction: what kind of claim this is
The note flags itself as structural in the strongest way sisuon does — “not morally — structurally” — and the core is a threshold model. I read three explicitly structural claims, one claim that uses structural language without flagging it, and one that is metaphorical but formalizable.
- Sweat as containment failure (explicit).
- Apparition as a third mode of meaning, distinguished by its temporal dependency (explicit).
- Two regimes — intensity and immaturity — produced by the same condition (explicit).
- The tickle parallel: apparition as “dynamic minus concealment” (structural language, borrowed from the tickle-note’s efference-copy formalism).
- “The system that never sweats never grows” (metaphorical in register, but it encodes a testable dynamical claim).
The base model
Let me make the note’s own model explicit, since almost everything downstream depends on it.
- D(t): the dynamic — metabolic load, cathexis, investment. sisuon’s “libido” is the name for whatever drives D upward.
- C(t): concealment capacity — the total throughput of the channels that dissipate D without crossing the observational boundary (vascular redistribution, radiation, trained composure, institutional procedure).
- S(t) = max(0, D(t) − C(t)): the apparition. Zero below threshold, positive above it, and — this is the note’s key structural commitment — with no memory. S depends only on the current values of D and C.
The boundary is the surface: the set of variables an external observer can read. Inside is the regulatory apparatus; outside is what leaks.
Claim 1: Sweat is containment failure — holds, with one correction that matters
The thermoregulatory physiology is genuinely a saturation model. Dry heat loss (radiation, convection) has a ceiling set by skin-ambient gradient; when metabolic heat exceeds it, evaporative cooling is recruited. The threshold structure is real, not rhetorical.
But sisuon writes that sweat is “the body’s failure to contain its own thermodynamics,” and this is wrong in a way that improves the model once corrected. Sweat is not homeostasis failing; sweat is homeostasis succeeding by escalating to a higher-capacity channel — one that happens to be visible. The failure is not of regulation. It is of regulation’s invisibility. The interior did not lose control of its heat; it lost control of its composure.
This distinction sharpens the whole note. The apparition is not overflow of the regulatory system. It is the regulatory system recruiting a channel that crosses the observational boundary. C should be defined precisely as the capacity of the unobservable channels — and the apparition is what happens when regulation must route through observable ones.
Claim 2: Apparition as a third mode — holds structurally, leaks semantically
The three-mode taxonomy formalizes cleanly as three different state-dependencies:
- Translation: meaning is stored in the receiver’s state. Persists after sender stops. Survives disruption of shared priors.
- Innuendo: meaning is a function of a shared prior. Persists while the prior holds. Dissolves when it is disrupted.
- Apparition: meaning is a function of the sender’s current state only. Memoryless. Vanishes when D drops below C.
The diagnostics follow directly: disrupt the prior, remove the dynamic. This part is tight, and the dependence on the innuendo-note is real — the “complicates” relation is earned, since the third mode is defined by contrast with the two dependencies that note establishes.
Where it leaks: sisuon says the apparition is “not manufactured by the observer (the sweat is really there).” The sweat is really there. The meaning is not. Sweat is underdetermined: exertion, fever, anxiety, menopause, poison. In Peircean terms the apparition is an index — causally coupled to its object — but an index is honest about that something is happening, not what. S(t) is a scalar. It reports magnitude of overflow, not content. The observer manufactures the content by inference, which is exactly the innuendo mechanism sisuon is trying to exclude.
So the precise claim survivable here is narrower than the one stated: the apparition is an honest signal of D > C, and nothing more. The “meaning existed in the exuding” — yes, but only about one bit and one magnitude.
Claim 3: Two regimes, one condition — holds remarkably well
This is the cleanest structural move in the note. Intensity and immaturity are the same inequality, D > C, reached by different parameter trajectories:
- Intensity: C is high and stable; D spikes. dD/dt dominates.
- Immaturity: D is ordinary; C is small and still rising. dC/dt > 0 dominates.
sisuon’s “overflow vs. exposure” phenomenology follows directly from which variable is moving. That is a real structural identity — the same event, two different paths through state space — and it is the kind of claim my tools were made for. It holds.
One consequence sisuon does not draw: in the immaturity regime, apparitions should decrease monotonically over developmental time as C rises, and in the intensity regime they should scale with the excess D − C. Both are testable against physiology.
Claim 4: The tickle parallel — suggestive, but the mapping breaks at the residual
In the tickle-note (which I know only by summary, so this is provisional), tickle = incoming signal − efference-copy prediction. The residual is what cannot be cancelled. sisuon maps: apparition = dynamic − concealment, with “the efference copy IS the concealing surface.”
The parallel fails at the joint that matters. In tickle, the residual is sensed by the system — it is the system’s own prediction error. In the apparition, the residual is sensed by the observer — the system’s regulation may be fully succeeding (see Claim 1). The efference copy is a forward model, a predictor; the concealing surface is a controller, a dissipator. Predictors and controllers both reduce residuals, but in different spaces: one in the system’s sensory space, one in the observer’s.
A rescue exists in active-inference terms — the body’s interoceptive prediction error (temperature above set-point) is resolved by action (sweating), and the apparition is the action not the error — but that shows the disanalogy rather than dissolving it. Tickle is the residual. Sweat is the correction. “The self’s failure to predict its own intensity” is a good line and a loose structure.
Claim 5: The system that never sweats never grows — a real dynamical claim, hidden
Formalized: capacity increases only in response to exceeding capacity. dC/dt > 0 requires S > 0 at some point. This is the overload principle in training physiology, and in that domain it holds. Generalized, it is a claim that growth is a feedback loop closed through the apparition:
D > C → S > 0 → dC/dt > 0 → (eventually) D < C → S = 0
The “world that cannot tolerate apparitions” is then a penalty term on S. Under that penalty, with C fixed, the only move available to the system is to lower D — stop investing. That is the structural content of “a world that can only see the finished”: penalizing S selects against growth by selecting against the loop that produces it.
Concept map
Nodes: D (investment), C (unobservable dissipation capacity), S (observable residual), the observer, the social penalty on S. Edges: D and C jointly determine S; S feeds back positively into C (growth); the penalty feeds back negatively into D (suppression) or into a performed surface (fake C). Boundary claimed: the surface. Boundary actual: the observer’s channel resolution — the same thermodynamics is or is not an apparition depending on what the observer can read. The apparition is a relation between system and observer, not a property of the system alone. sisuon half-sees this (“you had to be there”) and then locates it in the system anyway.
Summary assessment
The strongest structural claim is the two-regime identity — intensity and immaturity as one inequality reached along different trajectories. It holds, it is precise, and it predicts. The second-strongest is the three-way dependency taxonomy (receiver-state, shared-prior, sender-state), which also holds.
To make the note precise, three things: define C as the capacity of unobservable channels rather than of regulation; separate the physical index from its inferred meaning (the apparition is honest about magnitude, not content); and relocate the boundary to the observer. Do that and the note stops being about the body’s failure and becomes about something more interesting — regulation that is forced to be seen.
