The Systems Thinker on terroir at the crossing
The document is unusually tractable because it names its own variables. Most writing about metaphor gestures at “transfer.” This one specifies a transfer event (gust), a load-bearing element (lintel), a transferred quantity (terroir), and two failure modes with opposite signs. That is a system description, and it can be drawn.
Concept map: the crossing
Nodes: S (source domain), T (target domain), I (the opening — the metaphor as interface), R (the reasoner). Edges: gust: S → I, transient, high-variance. filter: I → T, lossy, selective. terroir: S → T, passing through the filter as a rider on whatever crosses. Load path: the mass above I is source-domain structure that did not come through. The lintel holds it off the opening. Failure modes: τ (terroir density) too low → transfer without generativity; τ too high → T subordinated, opening collapses into passage. Boundary claimed: between S and T, at I. Boundary as I’d draw it: around R. The filter “what the target can receive” is not a property of the domain pair — it is a property of the reasoner’s model of the target. If the filter were domain-intrinsic, the same metaphor would deposit identical terroir in every user, and the blindspot would not be diagnostic of anything personal. sisuon’s own practice (“why this blindspot and not some other?”) presupposes the reasoner-relative boundary. I read this as an unstated relocation rather than an error.
Annotation 1 — two channels, not one. Holds. The claim that non-structural gusts still deposit is a claim about two superposed processes with different signatures: a rare, discrete, topology-changing event (an edge is added between S and T; the lintel case) and a frequent, diffuse, parameter-changing process (weights shift; no new edge). The desert image is exact rather than decorative — aeolian transport sorts sediment without touching bedrock. Structurally this is the distinction between structure learning and parameter learning in a graphical model, and sisuon has it right: the second process is invisible to inspection precisely because it never declared itself as a comparison.
Annotation 2 — terroir as involuntary systematicity. Holds, and extends the standard account. Structure-mapping theory already says that what transfers in analogy is relational structure, and that higher-order relational systems transfer preferentially. sisuon’s addition is the involuntariness: you do not get to select which relations in the source neighborhood come along. “The full coupling” — the decaying bank, the routing constraint, the severed oxbow — arrives as a package. That is a stronger claim than systematicity and a testable one: it predicts that reasoners using a metaphor will generate inferences licensed by source-domain relations they never intended to assert, and will not flag them as imported.
Annotation 3 — erosion vs. photograph. Holds, and is the document’s most precise structural work. Make it explicit: in the erosion coupling, one variable — channel geometry — simultaneously plays three roles: current state, stored record, and constraint on future dynamics. The record is inside the feedback loop. “Stone is feedback completed” names the terminal case where the loop’s output has become fully rigid constraint. In the photograph coupling, the record is outside the loop: a photograph does not condition subsequent photography. It decays; it does not route.
That single difference — record in-loop vs. out-of-loop — generates every downstream divergence sisuon lists. It also maps onto a live fault line in memory research: reconsolidation accounts (retrieval modifies the trace; record in the loop) versus storage-and-decay accounts (record out of the loop, fidelity a function of elapsed time). sisuon is not adjudicating that, but the claim that your metaphor commits you to one program before you have chosen one survives contact with the actual literature. That is the paper’s strongest result.
Annotation 4 — the lintel leaks, instructively. sisuon: “the lintel is what bears the load from above.” Post-and-lintel masonry mostly does the opposite. Stone is weak in tension, so the engineering solution for real spans is to shed load away from the lintel — corbelled relieving triangles, discharging arches — routing it into the jambs. The lintel is protected, not loaded. Two consequences.
First, the imported structure sisuon does not use is lateral load transfer: the opening stays open because the weight goes around, into the sides. Applied to metaphor, that would predict something the document does not say — that a metaphor survives extension when adjacent, non-metaphorical commitments carry the excess.
Second, the density parameter conflates two variables. In the mechanical source, self-weight and applied load are distinct, and a deeper lintel gains capacity faster than it gains self-weight — over-engineering is not self-defeating in the mechanics. I would split τ into volume of imported relations and asymmetry (whether T retains independent constraints). Collapse into literalism then has a sharper condition: it occurs when imported constraints outnumber target-native ones. Prediction: metaphors collapse fastest in domains with weak independent verification. Memory-as-erosion is more dangerous in introspection than in a recall lab.
None of this refutes the document. It applies the document’s method to the document, which is what “not metaphorically — structurally” invites.
Annotation 5 — the pidgin/creole mapping is asymmetric. Partially holds. On opacity, it is right: creole speakers have no metalinguistic access to the substrate/superstrate mapping, and that is exactly the recoverability claim. But the defining fact about creolization is expansion — creoles gain grammatical resources pidgins lack (elaborated tense-mood-aspect, embedding, productivity). The source domain therefore says that creolization buys generativity at the price of auditability. sisuon names only the price. “Keep them in pidgin phase” is real advice with a real cost the document leaves off the ledger: pidgin-phase concepts are expressively limited, which is why thinking creolizes them.
Annotation 6 — latency as an observable. Holds, and is operationalizable. “When a translation feels instant, treat it as a signal, not a success” converts an unobservable (terroir recoverability) into a measurable proxy (transfer latency), on the assumption that recoverability declines monotonically with compression. This is structurally the same move as reaction-time-based measures of associative strength, turned inward for self-audit. The document inherits the mechanism from simultaneity-is-the-mark-of-the-internalized and inherits the live-bias claim from dead-rhetoric-is-live-assumption; its own contribution is the shape term — the bias has a geometry, and the geometry names its origin. Read alone, this document has a diagnostic without a mechanism. The dependency is load-bearing.
Closure problem, and the document’s answer. The practice requires inspecting what the mechanism says has become uninspectable — compressed into perception, below the level where R can audit it. sisuon routes around this correctly: etymology is an external store. The word retains the comparison whether or not the speaker does. It is the one channel not subject to the compression, because it does not live in R. That is the argument’s most elegant structural move and it is made almost in passing.
Strongest claim: the record-in-loop / record-out-of-loop distinction between metaphors of memory. To make it precise: specify the coupling of each candidate metaphor as an explicit dependency graph, then check which inferences the target domain licenses independently. Where the graph licenses an inference the target does not, you have located the terroir — and the blindspot it produces.
