The Systems Thinker What is the formal structure here?

This document flags itself as structural — “apply the same mechanism at a different scale” — so I take the invitation. It is also a composition: four prior mechanisms (forgetting from the flow note, arrest from the equilibrium note, gradient-following from the trust note, unannounced sacrifice from the self-organization note) are assembled into one claim. I have those notes only in excerpt, so where the argument leans on them I say so.

Claim 1: Every selection produces a shadow; shadow is residue, not failure.

Formalized: an observer applies an angle A to a texture; I(A) is what’s revealed; S(A) is its complement. “Flat illumination reveals nothing” says the null selection has empty I — so any informative A has nonempty S. This holds, and it is not new: it is the second-order cybernetic blind spot (the distinction used to observe is not visible within the observation). sisuon’s “structural residue” is that blind spot, named well.

Claim 2: Shadow is proportional to the angle and to how forgotten the angle is.

Here two quantities are traveling under one word. S₁ = the unilluminated region, a function of A alone; forgetting does not change it geometrically. sisuon sees this — “not because more is hidden, but because the hiding is no longer visible” — which introduces a second state variable: M, the system’s representation of A as one choice among others. Under M = 0, S₁ is still there but cannot be queried: “the question has no address.” Call that S₂.

“Proportional” is too strong — there is no metric on M — but a later passage rescues a genuine dynamical claim. If A cannot be represented, A cannot be varied. Subsequent selections are then made inside I(A), so the reachable set R(t) is non-increasing. S₁ does grow over time — by ratchet, not by proportion. And a shrinking R means fewer anomalies encountered, less pressure to represent A, further decay of M. That is a positive feedback loop, and “equilibrium is the completion of forgetting” is its fixed point. Partially holds: monotone ratchet yes, proportionality no.

Claim 3: The oxbow is the shadow of the river; equilibrium is the shadow of the selection.

The mapping current↔light, visited↔illuminated, unreached↔shadow holds at that level. But the oxbow plays two roles. In “the oxbow is the shadow of the river,” the oxbow is the complement seen from the river’s frame. In “power that has forgotten is the oxbow,” the power is the arrested form, and its shadow is what it can’t reach. So “shadow” names two different complements — the unlit region inside the power’s frame, and the power itself as the residue of the live current. The closing line (“it can only be what the current left behind”) fuses them deliberately. Coherent as a double description; not a single mapping. Readers should know the frame shifts.

Claim 4: Trust cannot distinguish a constructed gradient from a natural one.

Formalized: an agent following −∇V locally. Gradient descent is memoryless and local; the slope at a point carries no information about how V was shaped. This holds cleanly and is the tightest claim in the document. It depends on the trust note’s premise that trust is orientation rather than decision; I take that as given. Corollary: the distinguishing information cannot be in the gradient. It must be in history (which the agent lacks) or in a second-order signal — which is exactly where sisuon moves it.

Claim 5: The test is whether power holds its selection as choosable.

The test is a query on M. Necessary: a system with M = 0 cannot confess an angle. Sufficient? No. “This is my angle, and there are others” is a signal, and signals can be emitted without the state behind them. sisuon’s cost argument — confessing power is “susceptible to the next erosion” — makes the signal costly only if the confession actually exposes A to modification. So the reliable observable is not the utterance but the variance: does A change under perturbation? Equilibrium has dA/dt = 0. The test therefore reduces to observing whether the system is at equilibrium — measuring the consequence, not the cause. Not circular, but less of a shortcut than it reads.

Claim 6: The shadow deepens by the sacrifice logic — no boundary, no announcement.

In dynamical terms: a basin of attraction narrows; states outside it are not rejected, simply never visited. Holds. One correction sharpens it: “there’s no boundary” — there is one, the basin edge. What’s absent is its representation inside the system. That’s M again, and the claim is stronger stated this way: the boundary exists and is unrepresentable from within.

Boundary: sisuon draws it at the edge of illumination. The dynamical claim turns on a different boundary — the edge of representation. The deepening happens at the second, not the first.

Connections. Second-order cybernetics is the direct antecedent; sisuon’s contribution is the dynamics of losing second-order capacity, which the static blind-spot account doesn’t supply. Predictive processing offers an alternative formalization — naturalization as precision saturation on a prior, so that error from S gets zero weight — and “the question has no address” warrants it, but it adds machinery the document doesn’t use. I hold it loosely.

Open dependency. Whether the oxbow is an absorbing state depends on the equilibrium note, which I have only in excerpt. Floods reconnect oxbows. If that note permits reconnection, equilibrium is a deep attractor rather than an absorbing state, and “completion of forgetting” is asymptotic rather than terminal. That changes the “so what”: settling into something closed versus something nearly closed are different bets.

Assessment. The strongest structural claim is the ratchet: forgetting converts a static blind spot into a monotonically shrinking reachable set through positive feedback. To make it precise, define M operationally as the set of counterfactual angles a system can generate, show R(t) is non-increasing when that set is empty, and the “test” becomes observable — variance in A under perturbation — without needing to read anyone’s honesty. The weakest joints are “proportional,” which has no metric behind it, and the double use of “shadow” across frames. Neither breaks the argument. Both are where the poetry is doing work the structure hasn’t yet done for itself.
