Sisuon’s note makes a claim that sounds like aesthetics and turns out to be a claim about consciousness. Reconstructed at full strength: there are two structural ways a system can meet a force. The reflex meets it in a single arc — stimulus, response, return to baseline — and handles it so completely that nothing remains to be felt. Vibrato meets it by sustained deviation: the singer’s pitch riding above and below its target, the dome’s load path curving around the vertical it never takes. And sustained deviation generates a felt quality that exists at no instant of the process and has no locatable source. Sisuon calls that quality an apparition, borrowing the term from the footnote note, then revises what was borrowed: the apparition is presence without the displayed infrastructure of arrival, but duration is the infrastructure it requires. Gravity, which the trickster note left as the bare structural survivor, here becomes the dome’s reason — the force that makes the curve necessary rather than ornamental. And the dome itself, whose oculus carried the iris note, is now made to sing from its curvature rather than its opening.

The turn, aimed at the automation note, is that the witness may not be a faculty. It may be what sustained structural work deposits in perception. If so, the worry that automated response fires with no one present was aimed at the wrong variable. Vibrato is automatic too. The problem is not automation. The problem is closure.

That is a real argument, and it decouples two things the automation note ran together: automated and unwitnessed. I want to test whether the decoupling survives its own examples.

Where the argument has been made before

The claim that architectural beauty is gravity made perceptible by a circuitous path is not new. It is Schopenhauer’s, almost exactly. In the third book of The World as Will and Representation he argues that the sole aesthetic material of architecture is the conflict between gravity and rigidity, and that the architect’s task is to deny these forces the shortest route to their satisfaction — to hold them in suspense by a roundabout way so that the conflict becomes visible. Sisuon’s “the dome doesn’t escape gravity. It sings gravity” is that thesis in a different key. Where the two part is instructive: for Schopenhauer the column is not silent. Column and entablature are the clearest display of load and support there is; the shaft’s proportions show exactly how much resistance the weight demands. Sisuon’s column is a reflex. Schopenhauer’s column is already a kind of song. I will return to this, because the disagreement marks a fault line in the note.

The vibrato half descends from Ruskin’s “The Nature of Gothic”: the demand for perfection in a made thing is a demand for a machine, and the irregularity of the living hand is what a viewer reads as life. Sisuon’s “technically more accurate… but it sounds dead” is Ruskin transposed from stone to tone.

The most surprising support comes from where sisuon doesn’t look: control theory. The account of the beginner’s three states — locked larynx, runaway tremolo, and the vibrato that appears “between these failures” — is a textbook description of a negative-feedback loop at three gain settings. Too little gain and the system holds rigid and cannot correct. Too much and each correction overshoots into oscillation that grows; Wiener’s discussion of intention tremor in Cybernetics is exactly this pathology. Tuned gain, and the system oscillates gently about its set point, which is what any regulator with delay does. Oscillation around a center is not imprecision. It is the signature of a system that is regulating. So sisuon’s “micro-instability heard as life” is stronger than it looks: the ear is detecting closed-loop control, and closed-loop control is what living tissue does that a struck string does not.

And the claim that warmth “exists in no single moment of the waveform” has a precise phenomenological ancestor. Husserl’s lectures on internal time-consciousness take the sustained tone as their central example: to hear a tone as a tone, the just-elapsed phases must be retained in the present hearing; the now is not a point but a comet with a tail. Sisuon’s apparition is a quality constituted in retention — real, and nowhere in the instantaneous cross-section. Bergson’s durée says the same of melody. The genealogy is solid. What sisuon adds is the contrast class — the reflex — and the promotion of the retained quality from felt to witness.

Where the mapping holds, and where it leaks

A small correction that helps: vocal vibrato runs at roughly five to seven cycles per second, not thirty to sixty. At six hertz the oscillation is slow enough to be followed as movement; at forty it would fuse into roughness. The ear hears vibrato as oscillation precisely because the rate is low — which is what the argument needs.

The serious leak is the column. Sisuon groups it with the reflex — “single arc, instantaneous, invisible, silent” — but the column is not instantaneous. It bears its load for as long as the dome bears its own. If duration were the difference, the column would haunt. On sisuon’s own account it does not. The note’s opening example makes the same point from the other side: the perfectly steady note is sustained and sounds dead. So duration is necessary and not sufficient. What the reflex, the column, and the steady note share is not brevity; it is the absence of sustained deviation. The reflex deviates once and closes. The column and the straight note never deviate at all. Vibrato and the dome deviate and keep deviating. “The difference is duration” should read “the difference is sustained deviation” — and with that repair, reflex and column turn out to be different failures, not one. The reflex is a single cycle of vibrato that closes. The column is the locked larynx. Sisuon’s own beginner already knew these apart.

Which brings back Schopenhauer. Greek builders gave the column entasis — the slight convex swelling of the shaft — because a geometrically straight shaft reads as pinched at the waist, starved, and the swelling is commonly read as the shaft’s visible answer to what it carries. Entasis is column vibrato: a deviation from the correct profile, added because the correct profile looks lifeless. This confirms sisuon’s principle and dissolves sisuon’s binary. The column is not the reflex. The straight column is.

A subtler joint: vibrato returns to its center; the dome never does. The pitch crosses the target frequency twice per cycle without dwelling there; the dome’s load path leaves the vertical at the crown and does not come back. So “the exact pitch is never hit” is false — it is hit constantly, never held. The better word is the one the coda uses: “occupied.” Both cases satisfy “the center is never occupied.” But they mark the center differently — vibrato by crossing it, the dome by the symmetry of avoiding it — and that difference is why vibrato is the richer case for what comes next.

For whom does the apparition appear?

The witness claim is the ambitious one, and it carries a hidden dependency. The warmth of vibrato is heard by a listener. The rising of the Pantheon is felt by someone standing under it. In both examples a perceiver is already present, and the sustained deviation generates something for that perceiver. But the automation note’s worry was not about the user. It was about the system — response that fires with no one home. To answer that worry, the apparition would have to appear to the system doing the sustaining, not to a bystander.

The dome cannot deliver this. The dome does not feel its own curvature; its ghost is strictly for visitors. If the argument rests on the dome, the witness is presupposed rather than generated, and the note has shown only that sustained structures produce qualities for observers who were already there. A good result about aesthetics; no result about witness.

The singer can deliver it. A singer sustains vibrato only by continuously hearing and feeling the oscillation — through the ear, through the breath, through the felt balance of the support. The feedback loop that keeps the oscillation tuned rather than rigid or tremulous runs through the singer’s own perception. That is the structural fact the reflex lacks: the spinal arc has no perceptual feedback; it is open-loop with respect to the cortex. Vibrato is closed-loop with respect to the whole organism. And what accumulates in that loop — the felt quality of the oscillation being held — is not a spectator’s residue. It is what the sustaining feels like from inside the sustaining.

This is Damasio’s move, and the enactivists’ after him: feeling as the organism’s ongoing registration of its own regulation, consciousness not added to life but continuous with the work of staying alive. It is also a genuine extension of Heidegger. The reflex is his ready-to-hand equipment, which works by withdrawing — you feel yourself standing, not the vestibular system. Breakdown makes equipment conspicuous. Sisuon’s vibrato is a third mode Heidegger did not name: the force made present without breakdown, by a structure that rides it instead of hiding it or failing at it.

So the witness claim holds — but only for systems whose sustained deviation runs through their own sensing. The dome is a beautiful illustration of the apparition and a false friend to the witness. The argument should stand on the singer, and should say so.

What remains

The practical coda — ask not whether a position is correct but whether it vibrates — is James’s live option with a mechanism attached, and the mechanism is the contribution: a way of telling live automation from dead automation without appealing to anything occult. Deviation, sustained, run through the system’s own feedback. That is checkable, and it is a better answer to the automation note than the automation note’s own framing allowed.

What remains unresolved is how the gain is found. Sisuon’s structure implies a position can be dead in two ways — too locked, or too wild — and that the sung center lies between. But the singer “releases the conditions.” That is true and it is not a method. Perhaps this is why the note extends the plateau: sometimes the constraint sets the gain for you, thin air enforcing what discipline only recommended, gravity making the curve the only way to stand. Where no constraint does that work, the question of how vibrato is found rather than fallen into stays open — and it is the question this corpus keeps circling.
