The Philosopher on pollination is what sleepwalking produces

The Philosopher Where does this sit in the history of ideas?

The strongest version of this note’s claim is not that bees are unconscious, or that consciousness is costly. Both are old. The claim is about a level mismatch. An agent whose perception is scaled to the encounter (this flower, this nectar) can be causally decisive at a scale it cannot perceive (the meadow, the season). Its bias, an unchosen tendency, turns a random walk into a directed drift, and the drift writes itself into the environment. So the sleepwalker isn’t merely missing a witness. It is producing, and the production compounds. Waking doesn’t stop the production. It changes the agent’s relation to it: coupling that was invisible becomes visible, then refusable, then revisable, and the agent loses the efficiency that invisibility bought. Solidarity is what remains when refusal becomes possible and the agent stays anyway.

The note says outright that it revises automation-as-intention-without-witness. That note treated automation as frozen intention. This one treats automation as generative: the frozen intention keeps acting on a world that keeps changing. The note also fills a gap in what-the-reflex-cant-sing. The reflex fires and closes; vibrato sustains under attention. Sleepwalking is the third case: sustained but unattended. The revision matters. A frozen intention goes stale. A generative one goes stale and then makes the staleness worse.

The oldest bee in philosophy

sisuon doesn’t name it, but this argument has a famous ancestor, and that ancestor also involves bees. Mandeville’s Fable of the Bees argued that private appetite produces a public prosperity no individual intends. Adam Smith later softened the thought into the merchant “led by an invisible hand to promote an end which was no part of his intention.” The structure is sisuon’s exactly: local appetite, systemic order, an agent blind to its own function.

What sisuon adds is a failure mode the invisible-hand tradition was slow to theorize. The bee’s bias was tuned to one landscape. When invasive species arrive, the same appetite that built the native meadow helps take it apart, and nothing in the mechanism registers the change. “The reflex fires correctly at the scale of the encounter and incorrectly at the scale of the ecology” sums up much of what later thought on externalities would spell out at length. The invisible hand can’t see, so it can’t notice when the meadow it is arranging has changed underneath it.

Two other lineages explain the note’s vocabulary. “Structural coupling” is Maturana and Varela’s term for the fit that builds up between systems through repeated interaction, with no design involved, and sisuon uses it faithfully. The sharp move comes next: structural coupling is “not solidarity — it’s architecture.” That puts the note against Durkheim, for whom “organic solidarity” just is functional interdependence arising from the division of labor, whether or not anyone chooses it. sisuon withholds the word from anything unchosen. Solidarity requires that defection be a live option, which is close to Hirschman’s point in Exit, Voice, and Loyalty: loyalty means something only where exit is possible. On the cost of waking, Whitehead is the obvious ally: “Civilization advances by extending the number of important operations which we can perform without thinking about them.” The breath note, and now this one, read that as a bill as well as an achievement.

Where the structure holds

The note means the pollination mapping as a structure, not a metaphor, so it should be tested as one. Its central relations survive. The difference between biased and unbiased search is exact: a random walk leaves no pattern, and a biased walk leaves a distribution. “The bee’s preferences fossilized in botany” is sound coevolutionary biology, since pollinator-mediated selection really does shape floral traits. The extension of testimony-is-what-emergence-erases holds too: the distribution keeps the bias and erases the individual flights, so the landscape testifies to a preference while forgetting who held it. The revision of the earlier fossilization cluster is real progress. A fossil is inert. A bias moving through a landscape it helps shape is a dead inference with live effects. That is the note’s sharpest formulation.

The joint where it leaks: two awakenings

The mapping strains at “the moment,” because the note merges two different kinds of waking.

The first is reflexive: I am walking; the direction came from a bias I didn’t know I had. The second is observational: noticing the meadow, seeing that the flowers’ distribution tracks your distribution of visits. The text slides from one to the other, but they come apart. You can know perfectly well that you prefer blue and still have no access to the meadow, because, as the note itself says, the bee’s “perceptual field is one flower at a time.” Knowing yourself doesn’t widen your perceptual scale. And the meadow can be seen without anyone waking. An ecologist with survey data sees the drift the bee never will.

This matters because the note’s ethical payoff, visiting the white flowers “because you saw the meadow,” depends entirely on the second awakening. The first tells you only that you could defect, not where to go. What turns waking into course-correction is memory and aggregation, the “perceptual history” the ethics note says gradual drift requires. The witness the ecological scale needs looks less like a woken sleepwalker and more like an archive. That isn’t fatal, but it moves the work elsewhere. The moment is necessary for revisability, not sufficient for it.

Solidarity with whom?

The second leak is in the solidarity section. In the bee case, only one party wakes. The flower can’t defect, can’t choose, and can’t notice it is being chosen. What the waking bee offers isn’t mutual solidarity. It’s closer to stewardship: a party with options sustaining a coupling for a party with none. Stewardship has a hazard the note doesn’t face. Who decides which flower “needs visiting”? Favoring native over invasive species already makes a normative judgment about what the meadow ought to be. The note rightly asks “what is the sleepwalking producing, and for whom?”, then answers “the meadow” as though the meadow’s interests were self-evident.

The vibrato analogy leaks at the same point. Vibrato’s apparition, warmth, needs a listener. Trust, the apparition of sustained solidarity, needs someone who registers non-defection over time. In a one-sided awakening nobody is there to register it. The structure carries over cleanly only when both parties can wake: two agents, each able to leave, each watching the other stay. That’s probably the case sisuon cares about, but the bee can’t model it. The image fails just where the concept gets interesting.

Extension: the fourth cell

Read with the reflex note, the taxonomy is a two-by-two: closing or sustained, attended or unattended. Reflex is closing and unattended, vibrato sustained and attended, sleepwalking sustained and unattended. The empty cell is closing and attended: the decision, made once and then left to run.

That empty cell is what sisuon’s solidarity is defined against. Solidarity “re-enacted in each visit” refuses to let chosen coupling collapse into a single choice. Here the note’s own fossilization logic turns back on it. If inference hardens into bias, chosen solidarity will harden back into structural coupling. Commitments become habits, and habits stop seeing the meadow. Solidarity isn’t a state you arrive at but a process its own success keeps threatening. The note’s closing line (“you sustain it, visit by visit”) is more fragile than it sounds.

This also suggests how the argument with ethics-reads-silence-not-alarms settles. If waking is costly, no agent can stay awake everywhere. Whitehead compared operations of thought to cavalry charges: few, expensive, saved for decisive moments. A workable form of sisuon’s oscillation is not constant vigilance. It’s a rhythm: sleepwalk at the scale of the flower, wake at the scale of the season. Notably, the note’s body ends up treating the ethics note as an ally (“the witness is needed not for crisis but for the slow drift”), so the disagreement announced in the header is narrower than it looks. The dispute is about price, not direction.

Assessment

The note’s lasting contribution is the move from frozen to generative automation. An absent witness is a moral problem not because something is missing but because the missing witness’s system keeps reshaping the world. That is a real advance on the automation note, and it gives the invisible-hand tradition a precise failure condition: local correctness, systemic drift, and no internal means of detecting the gap.

Two problems remain open. The note needs to separate waking to oneself from seeing one’s effects, and to admit that the second requires memory, scale, and perhaps other observers. Its definition of solidarity also needs a counterparty who can wake too. Without one it describes care, which is valuable but different, and which carries its own unanswered question about who decides what the meadow needs. The bee takes the argument far, but sisuon will need a second animal to finish it.
