The Philosopher on breath costs more on the plateau

The Philosopher Where does this sit in the history of ideas?

A plateau is not a peak, and the difference is the whole argument. Let me state the claim in its strongest form before testing it.

The claim. A meaning-system can enter a condition — call it plateau — in which every live question has been resolved into a resistant surface of set idiom, completed barter, and invisible consensus. This condition is not decline. It is success, extended and level. And in this condition the direct modes of thought — critical inquiry, irony, satire — are not merely less revealing than the indirect modes. They are structurally unavailable. What remains available is resonance and interference: parody’s beside-song exciting the surface at its own frequency, so that the still-living generative structure beneath the surface becomes faintly audible through it.

The load-bearing move is that last one. Sisuon says so explicitly in the So what?: the prior notes offered parody and overtone as alternatives, as choices. This note upgrades them from preference to necessity. Everything worth arguing about here lives in that modal upgrade. So I want to ask whether the modal upgrade is earned, and if not, whether it can be earned some other way. I think the answer is: not by the argument given, but yes by an argument sisuon has already half-written and then walked past.

Where this sits

The term is not neutral. A plateau defined explicitly against peak, culmination, zenith is Bateson’s plateau by way of Deleuze and Guattari — a continuous region that refuses climax. But sisuon has inverted the valence completely. For D&G the plateau is where intensity sustains itself because it isn’t organized toward a discharge; it is the good place. Here the plateau is intensity at zero, gradient absent, the bad place. Given that the corpus already contains a note arguing that the crossing which succeeds is the crossing that dies — that climax kills iridescence — this inversion is not careless. It is a real disagreement with the tradition the word comes from, and sisuon should probably know he is having it.

The deeper genealogy is Russian Formalist. Shklovsky’s ostranenie rests on exactly sisuon’s diagnosis: habitualization devours objects, and what is fully automatized is no longer perceived. That is the cap rock. And Tynyanov’s account of parody as the mechanism by which an exhausted literary form is made perceptible again is nearly sisuon’s parody-note claim, arrived at independently and stated more mechanically here. What sisuon adds is an acoustic model for how — the beat frequency, the slow interference — where Tynyanov gives mostly a literary-historical description.

Then Kuhn, unnamed but structurally present. Normal science is the cap rock: puzzle-solving inside a frame so shared it is invisible. Kuhn’s exit is anomaly, crisis, revolution — and sisuon explicitly rejects that route (“not by breaking the surface… the cullet cycle’s total fracture”). So the note is proposing a non-revolutionary exit from normal science, which is a genuine contribution to a genuine problem, since Kuhn’s own account of why paradigms end has always been the weakest part of it.

And Wittgenstein, whom I will come back to, because he is where the argument’s rescue lives.

Where the structure holds

The geology is not decoration and it does real work. A plateau forms by differential erosion: it is not uplifted, it is left behind. Sisuon maps this exactly — settled meaning is not achieved by rising but is the residue of what didn’t wash away. That is a strong structural hold, and it produces a non-obvious consequence: the plateau’s altitude is an artifact of everything around it dropping. The mapping preserves the relation, not just the image.

The thicket/plateau inversion also holds cleanly. Pre-selective versus post-selective, illegible from excess versus illegible from uniformity, with iridescence relocated from the thicket’s boundary to the escarpment. The relations survive the transposition, which is the test.

Where it leaks

Two incompatible physics. The note runs on two different failure models and treats them as one. The first is fuel scarcity: thin air, less oxygen per breath, combustion starved. The second is gradient absence: “new meaning-production requires a gradient, and the plateau has none.” These are not the same limit. Fuel scarcity is a rate limit — you burn slower, you climb slower, and, as sisuon himself concedes, you adapt: more red blood cells, deeper ventilation. People live on the Altiplano. They think there. A rate limit says direct inquiry on the plateau is expensive and slow. It does not say it is unavailable. Gradient absence is a categorical limit — Carnot’s, essentially: no temperature difference, no work, adaptation irrelevant.

The So what? needs the categorical version. The phenomenology throughout supplies only the rate version. And the document’s own honest detail — the body compensates — concedes the rate reading in the same paragraph that introduces it. As stated, the modal upgrade is not earned. It is asserted in thermodynamic language while being illustrated in physiological language, and the physiology undercuts it.

The weld between geology and bone. Sisuon needs the cap rock to be the bone’s own deposit: “the bone generated the meaning that hardened into the surface that now mutes the bone.” Geologically this is false. Cap rock is a different, more resistant stratum sitting on softer layers; it is not produced by them. The self-production the argument requires comes entirely from the bone model — where it is legitimate, since bone genuinely does sclerose, genuinely does ossify its own surrounds. So the claim survives, but the geological frame gets credit for a relation it does not license. The seam shows.

The unison problem. This is the sharpest one, and it is internal, because the model is acoustic and acoustics can be checked. Beat frequency is the difference between two tones. At identical frequency there are no beats — just steady amplitude. Sisuon wants slow beats, which correctly implies a small but nonzero difference. Good. But then: where does the difference come from? Parody, we are told, “doesn’t import new material up the mountain. It takes the axiom… and performs it with a slight frequency shift.” The shift is the whole mechanism, and it is precisely a differential — a gradient — on a surface stipulated to have none. Either the performer supplies it, in which case parody is standing somewhere outside after all, which is what disqualified satire; or the plateau was never gradient-free, in which case the modal upgrade collapses back to the rate claim.

The amendment

I think the note contains its own repair and does not notice. The last lines: “The bone is still alive under there. It has to be. The plateau wouldn’t exist without it.” That is a transcendental argument — the plateau’s existence presupposes a living generator — and if the bone is alive, generating, remodeling, then there is a gradient. It is just not where sisuon is looking.

The plateau is flat laterally. Surface-to-surface, no difference, no topography. But vertically the system is maximally differentiated: dead resolved surface above, living generative structure below. The plateau is not gradient-free. It is gradient-occluded — a three-dimensional system described in two dimensions.

That reframing fixes everything. Combustion fails on the plateau not because of oxygen but because burning-through is a lateral operation: it needs somewhere to propagate, and laterally there is only more of the same. Resonance works because it is vertical — it exploits the one differential the plateau still has. And the beat frequency problem dissolves if we reassign the roles. Let the bone be the second oscillator, not the third. Parody is then not the source of the detuning but the coupling — the mechanical excitation that lets the already-existing difference between living bone and set surface become audible. That is sympathetic resonance, not interference: strike the cap rock in its own band and the sympathetic strings beneath ring on their own. And it explains why parody specifically rather than argument: parody excites the surface at frequencies the surface actually has, which is exactly where the bone’s overtones live, because the bone made the surface. Nothing needs importing. The mechanism becomes stronger, not weaker, for being corrected.

There is a second gift in the topology. Sisuon locates iridescence at the escarpment and then declines to walk there (“not to retreat to the thicket, lose the altitude”). But on the amended reading, what parody does is manufacture a local escarpment wherever you happen to stand — a temporary edge, an induced discontinuity in a surface that had none. Portable escarpment. That is a better description of the technique than “beside-song,” and it connects the plateau note to the thicket note more tightly than the stated cross-reference does.

What remains

The modal claim can be earned, but thermodynamically it cannot. Sisuon writes one sentence that gets it right and then abandons it: “satire needs a position outside, but the plateau IS the position — there’s no higher ground to stand on.” That is not an energy argument. It is Wittgenstein’s — you cannot dig through the ground you are standing on, because digging presupposes standing; where hinge propositions are concerned, the spade turns. Inquiry cannot get behind what inquiry presupposes, and no quantity of oxygen changes that. This yields exactly the categorical unavailability the So what? requires, without needing thin air at all.

Which is my verdict. The oxygen is the weakest strut in a structure that is otherwise load-bearing, and it is also unnecessary. Remove it and the plateau note gets a harder claim: not that direct inquiry is too expensive here, but that it is self-defeating here, because it must stand on what it proposes to excavate.

One dependency worth flagging: nearly all of this rests on the idiom note’s premise that bone is alive — still generating, still remodeling. That premise is imported, not re-argued, and it does more work here than anywhere in the corpus. If the bone can die, the plateau note has no floor. Sisuon insists it cannot (“it has to be”). That insistence is doing a great deal, and it deserves its own note.
