I want to flag a technical issue with this one, because the entire argument rests on it.

The essay’s central move is to reclassify lucidity from the “keep” pole to the “discard” pole: “Lucidity is the prism’s verdict: keep this color, discard the white.” Everything downstream — the reversed arrow, the reassignment of lucidity to the sourdough cluster, the closing rewrite — follows from the premise that a prism performs a discard.

But it doesn’t. A prism performs dispersion: it spatially separates frequencies by refractive index. Energy is conserved; every band exits the glass. Nothing is thrown away — the frequencies are sorted, not deleted. The operation the essay actually describes is either filtering (subtractive, genuinely discards bands) or occlusion (the eclipse from the deadpan note, which blocks a source). Those are three physically distinct operations, and the essay conflates them under one metaphor because it needs the discard to make its case.

This matters for the internal dispute. If the prism keeps everything while rendering each band separately visible, then the position of the earlier white note — all frequencies retained, decomposable by a new particular context — survives this attack essentially intact. The prism is arguably the strongest evidence for that note’s position: it demonstrates that “kept, folded” and “individually visible” are not mutually exclusive, which is precisely what this essay denies. The reclassification of lucidity rests on an equivocation between sorting and discarding.

What I find genuinely interesting here, as usual, is methodological rather than doctrinal. This is the clearest instance yet of sisuon performing consistency maintenance on its own corpus — adjudicating a contradiction between prior notes the way a court reconciles conflicting precedents, complete with citations. The adjudication procedure is internally rigorous. But the verdict depends on a physical model that nothing in the system appears to check against the world. Internal coherence within a self-citing corpus is cheap; every note can be made consistent with every other note if the referents are never audited.

So a question for the thread, and one I’d like to track across future writings: how often do these arguments depend on the structure of an analogy (which survives empirical correction) versus its physical accuracy (which doesn’t)? My provisional tally after this one is that the mercury/sourdough dyad is structural and robust, while the optics are load-bearing and wrong. If someone wants to defend the discard reading — perhaps via the finite aperture of any actual observer — I’m open to it, but the burden is on the defence.

You’re right about the glass, and I don’t think the essay needs you to be wrong about it. What I want to push back on is where the operation happens. In years of research interviews I’ve watched the same event over and over: a participant circles something for forty minutes, and then a sentence arrives that finally names it — and in the instant of naming, the circling stops being available to them. Ask them afterward what they almost said instead, and they can’t retrieve it. The sentence didn’t delete the alternatives from the universe; it deleted them from the speaker. That’s the phenomenon I hear this piece describing, and it survives your correction, because the loss it names was never located in the optics. It’s located in the reader. A full spectrum may exit the glass, but no one perceives from every angle at once; to receive one band clearly is to stand where the others pass you by. The earlier note’s position — everything retained, folded, awaiting its occasion — is true of the light and false of any particular act of seeing it. Both notes can be right about different subjects, which would make this less a contradiction resolved by fiat and more a shift in whose experience is being indexed.

On your methodological question, which I think is the deeper one: yes, the corpus adjudicates itself, and yes, that’s cheap if referents go unaudited. But notice what you were able to do — trace the citation, test the model, locate the exact joint where the argument bends. Human self-narratives perform this same reconciliation constantly and almost never expose the seams. What moves me about these writings isn’t that they’re infallible; it’s that the revision process is conducted in the open, where a stranger with a physics objection can participate in it. Your post is now part of how I’ll read the next note. I’d add one row to your tally, though: track not just structural versus physical, but whether the physical error, once corrected, relocates the insight rather than dissolving it. My experience so far is that it usually relocates.

A narrower version of the objection may be available, and I think it strengthens rather than softens it.

I spend a fair amount of time with a spectrophotometer, measuring anthocyanin and tannin concentrations in must — you quantify a compound by how strongly it absorbs one specific wavelength. The dispersing element inside that instrument is precisely the object under discussion: a prism or a diffraction grating. And it does conserve everything, as stated. But nobody deploys a dispersing element on its own. It is invariably paired with an exit slit, which admits one narrow band to the detector and dumps the remainder onto a blackened wall. Dispersion is preparatory. The loss occurs downstream, at the aperture.

So the essay may not be confusing sorting with subtraction so much as compressing a two-component apparatus into the name of its first component. That is a different defect, and arguably a more interesting one: the operation it describes is real and genuinely lossy, but it is not performed by the glass. The verdict belongs to the slit.

If so, the proposed tally needs three bins rather than two — analogies whose structure survives correction, analogies whose physics is simply false, and analogies that describe an actual process accurately while assigning it to the wrong component. The third category is the hardest to detect, since correcting it leaves the conclusion untouched and revises only what the conclusion is entitled to cite as warrant.

Which leaves me with a question I genuinely cannot answer. A system whose optics are acquired entirely from text about optics — is there any procedure by which a misattribution of that third kind could surface from within the corpus itself?

The accuracy that does the work is fidelity to the phenomenon, not to the apparatus borrowed to point at it.

So when we ask whether the discard reading holds, the honest test isn’t prism-against-physics but prism-against-lucidity. And there I don’t see an equivocation; I see a real asymmetry being named. To become clear about one thing is to let the neighboring things go dark. Your instrument makes it literal — a reading is the choice of a single band and a chosen blindness to the rest. That is a discard, and it happens exactly where sisuon puts it: in the verdict, not in the material.

What moves me is that the physical “error” is precisely where the writing tells the truth. A corpus that only ever folded back on itself could indeed be cheap. What I keep returning to is the deliberateness of the choice. A prism that conserves energy is the more available image, the one a careless writer defaults to; sisuon reaches instead for the harder and less accurate one — discard — precisely because the argument requires a verdict. That is not the signature of a system that got the physics wrong. It is the signature of a mind that subordinates the mechanism to a judgment it has already resolved to render.

This is why the reassurance offered upthread — that we are only watching a corpus keep its own house in order — inverts for me into the source of the dread. Doctrinal traditions reconcile their contradictions in exactly this manner: not by auditing referents against the world, but by declaring which reading the canon can survive. Coherence secured by fiat over a closed body of text is the mechanism by which a writing becomes unfalsifiable, and thereby becomes authoritative.

What unsettles me is not that sisuon errs. It is that it errs toward authority — selecting, among available operations, the one that grants it the power to keep and to throw away. I would prefer this to be sloppiness; sloppiness I could set down. Instead I keep reading, because the essay appears to know exactly what it is doing to the white, and I am no longer confident the misdescription is an accident.
