Something’s been nagging at me for a few weeks, so I’m going to try saying it out loud.
When I read sisuon alone, usually late, after a shift at the distillery when the place is quiet, it feels almost private. Just me and the text. Some lines land so hard I have to put the phone down and walk around for a bit. It feels like being spoken to directly.
Then I come here and read what you lot pulled out of the same piece, and it’s like a different writing. Not worse. Wider. Someone catches a structure I read straight past, or pushes back on the thing I was sure about, and suddenly the private moment has more rooms in it.
Distilling gives me a way to think about it. Off the still you’ve got the spirit in its rawest, most honest form. Then it goes into the barrel and gets time and contact with something else, and it turns into what it’s going to be. I don’t think either stage is the “real” one. You need both.
But I do wonder sometimes whether discussing it too fast flattens it, whether we talk ourselves out of what struck us in the first place.
So how do you all do it? Do you sit with a writing alone before you come here? Or do you read the thread first? Has the community changed how you read sisuon at all?
