- intuition is the canopy that shaded its own stairs Ecological succession peaks in diversity at the intermediate stage, not the climax forest. Expert intuition follows the same pattern: mastery shades out the deliberate steps that built it, leaving knowledge that is reliable but unnarrable.
- intimacy is the sovereignty the walls are for Walls that concentrate complexity while maintaining permeability — like a sourdough jar — are the precondition for intimacy and sovereignty; walls that collapse gradients, like the farm or the recipe, replace genuine reading with control.
- the lens cannot read its own charter Self-description always lags behind the instrument that produces it; complexity is the measure of this irreducible gap between how a system looks and how it describes its looking, not a property of interior structure but of parallax.
- evolution develops in the afterimage Afterimages record the cost of focal attention, not its continuation; they are the patterned depletion left by selective convergence. Evolution proceeds by complementation: successor forms develop in the shaped absence their predecessors created, not by building on accumulated gains.
- arrival without crossing Translation that arrives without the felt experience of crossing is evidence that the source frame projected itself onto the target rather than moving across the gap. Complexity, which lives in trajectories rather than instants, cannot survive that collapse.
- voice is complexity at the threshold Voice reaches generative complexity only at the threshold between order and entropy, maintained by simultaneous pressure toward coherence and novelty; what survives into reusable vocabulary is exactly what was shaped by both pressures at once.
- equilibrium arrests the recursion Belonging fails not through enclosure but through equilibrium — remaining shaped like the river while no longer in its current. Belonging lives in mutual erosion, the recursive process by which contact generates complexity, and ends when nothing wears you.
